The Assistant Workshop Manager supports the Preparation Manager in the day-to-day operation of the workshop, ensuring equipment is prepared safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards. The role combines hands-on operational involvement with leadership responsibilities, supporting productivity, compliance, quality and customer service objectives.

  • Extensive knowledge of the plant or equipment hire industry.
  • Previous experience in a workshop supervisory or senior engineer role.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven leadership and team-building abilities.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Strong customer service focus.
  • Commercial awareness.
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and workshop management systems.
  • Good understanding of engineer productivity, utilisation and efficiency targets.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise workloads and make sound decision

Workshop Operations

  • Support the day-to-day running of the workshop.
  • Allocate and monitor workloads to maximise engineer productivity and ensure customer deadlines are achieved.
  • Carry out final quality inspections where authorised.
  • Monitor workshop performance and recommend improvements.

Parts and Customer Support

  • Liaise with the Parts Department to ensure timely parts availability.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments, suppliers and customers.
  • Support excellent customer service and resolve operational issues where appropriate.

Team Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, guidance and support to workshop engineers and apprentices.
  • Coach and mentor staff to improve skills and performance.
  • Support induction, training and performance reviews.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with company policies and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Promote safe working practices and PPE compliance.
  • Report and investigate accidents, hazards and near misses where required.
