Info About What The Lead Manufacturing Engineer Role Involves

Low volume, high variation designer and manufacturer of industrial safety systems is looking for a specialist in modern lean principles. You will lead production improvement and Continuous Improvement projects across a low-volume, high-variety electro-mechanical manufacturing environment. You will also Identify and implement practical improvements across the shop floor, including layout, tooling, jigs/fixtures, stores, packing, workflow and opportunities for automation. Support the introduction and ongoing development of the new D365 ERP system, using it to improve production processes and ultimately introduce effective capacity planning. Take ownership of NPD production launches, determining how new products will be manufactured in-house, including tooling, fixtures, routing, operations and timings. Drive greater standardisation and SOP development, establishing efficient and repeatable manufacturing and packing processes. Bring fresh ideas to established ways of working, taking ownership of improvement projects from concept through to shop-floor implementation.

Essential Requirements Of The Lead Manufacturing Engineer

  • Degree, HNC, City & Guilds, apprenticeship/time-served background or equivalent relevant engineering/manufacturing experience.
  • Formal Lean/Continuous Improvement qualification, such as Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, with evidence of practically applying modern Lean principles.
  • Experience implementing or improving processes through a modern ERP/MRP system.
  • Practical understanding of manufacturing processes, including areas such as tooling, jigs, fixtures, production layouts, workflow and process improvement.
  • Experience of electro-mechanical or predominantly mechanical manufacturing/assembly.
  • Proactive and confident approach with the ability to take ownership, make decisions, challenge existing processes and drive change.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with shop-floor production teams when introducing change

Desirable Requirements Of The Lead Manufacturing Engineer

  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt with practical examples of Lean implementation.
  • Experience introducing automation into manual manufacturing, assembly or packing processes.
  • Experience with NPD / new product introduction, particularly developing manufacturing processes, routings, tooling and fixtures for new products.
  • Knowledge of capacity planning, including labour, machine availability, production timings and resource loading within an ERP system.
  • Experience improving stores, material flow, space utilisation, packing or warehouse processes.
  • Experience developing and improving SOPs and standardised work instruction.
