Overview
Job purpose and responsibilities for a 1-year apprenticeship in Health and Safety. You will gain practical experience through assignments within our company and complete professional health and safety qualifications during the programme.
Responsibilities
- Support Health and Safety Specialists in evaluating site capabilities for new hazardous raw materials (chemicals) and finished products, ensuring compliance with health and safety policies.
- Assist in Policy Development & Implementation by creating, reviewing, and amending Health and Safety related policies and procedures as required.
- Conduct Risk Assessments & Audits in collaboration with departments to identify potential risks and ensure thorough documentation for regulatory compliance.
- Support Incident Investigation & Reporting by assisting with inquiries into incidents and contributing to detailed reports for analysis and continuous improvement.
- Participate in Training & Development by assisting in the delivery of the Health and Safety training plan.
- Foster Cross-Team Collaboration by working with colleagues across a manufacturing site and the employee representative health and safety team to promote a proactive safety culture.
- Monitor Completion of Corrective Actions for Health and Safety improvements, ensuring timely implementation of recommendations and corrective actions.
- Support Safety Initiatives & Campaigns by assisting in crafting engaging safety campaigns that raise awareness and drive positive change within the organization.
- Engage with External stakeholders by working with local authorities and Health and Safety representatives from other Merck sites to ensure compliance with applicable legislation.
- Contribute to Continuous Improvement in Health and Safety activities by identifying and driving improvement initiatives across the site.
Curriculum & Qualifications
- The curriculum covers: HSE Legislation; HSE Management Systems and Standards; Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment; Incident Causation Theories and Prevention; Communication and Teamwork in HSE Practices.
- During the apprenticeship you will complete the SQA Modern Apprenticeship “Occupational Health and Safety – SCQF Level 7”, NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, and one other selected professional health and safety qualification. You will work as a full-time team member at Merck, gaining practical experience.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum three Highers including English (Essential)
- Biology or Chemistry Higher (Highly Desirable)
- A strong interest in health and safety
- Excellent communication skills
- Initiative, sense of responsibility, independence, and ability to work in a team
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving
- Ability to use Microsoft Office
