We’re looking for a Service Designer to join our Service Design and Digital Adoption team within the Transformation service at North Yorkshire Council.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the design and improvement of services that impact thousands of residents.

You’ll work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, supported by experienced senior colleagues and a manager who is committed to your development and progression.

You’ll help teams understand people’s needs, map how services work now, spot where things are difficult, and test better ways of working before changes are made.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and improvement of services using user‑centred design principles
  • Work with colleagues to understand user needs and service challenges
  • Contribute to key service design activities such as user research, journey mapping and prototyping
  • Help facilitate workshops and collaborative sessions with stakeholders
  • Support the promotion of service design best practice across the organisation

About you

We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic about service design and eager to develop their career. You may already have some experience in service design or similar user‑centred design roles. You do not need to know everything already. What matters is that you are curious, thoughtful, comfortable working with uncertainty, and able to turn what you learn from people into practical improvements.

Key qualifications

  • Have experience or knowledge of user‑centred design approaches
  • Know when and how to use service design tools and techniques (e.g., user journeys, personas, workshop facilitation)
  • Be a strong communicator who can work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Be motivated to learn, develop, and grow within the role

About us

The Transformation team at North Yorkshire Council helps services change in practical, sustainable ways. Our Service Design and Digital Adoption team focuses on creating accessible, efficient, and user‑friendly council services. We work on a wide range of projects, from digital services and automation tools to improving customer journeys.

Team collaboration

You’ll work closely with:

  • Service owners and product managers
  • Digital, data and automation specialists

Benefits

  • A supportive team environment with strong development opportunities
  • Hybrid and flexible working options
  • Local government pension scheme
  • Employee benefits including retail discounts and green car schemes
  • Health and wellbeing support, including an employee assistance programme

Application

When you apply, please tell us about you, why this role interests you, and how your experience, skills or approach match the “About you” section above. Interview dates: w/c 03rd August and w/c 10th August.
