About the role
As a Highways Officer, you will be responsible for managing and monitoring highway maintenance activities within the Richmond area, ensuring the network remains safe and serviceable for all users. Working closely with colleagues, contractors, local stakeholders and members of the public, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality highway maintenance services. This is a varied role that combines technical knowledge, problem solving and stakeholder engagement, offering the chance to make a visible difference within local communities.
Key responsibilities
- Managing highway inspections and ensuring compliance with required standards and service levels.
- Identifying and ordering maintenance works to address defects and maintain network safety.
- Liaising with contractors, local authorities, parish councils and members of the public on highway matters.
- Supporting the delivery of routine and reactive highway maintenance programmes.
- Contributing to winter maintenance and emergency response activities, including participation in out-of-hours rotas.
- Assisting with customer enquiries, public liability claims, and highway-related investigations.
- Monitoring performance information and supporting continuous service improvement.
About you
- Experience working within highways maintenance, highways operations or a related service environment.
- Knowledge of highways legislation, inspection regimes and maintenance practices.
- Experience of planning, coordinating or monitoring highways works programmes.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the confidence to engage with a wide range of stakeholders.
- The ability to make sound decisions and exercise professional judgement in challenging situations.
- Good analytical skills and the ability to interpret information and identify solutions.
- A full driving licence and the ability to travel across North Yorkshire.
