As Building Control Manager, you’ll be entrusted with a leadership role, overseeing a newly formed team of skilled professionals responsible for maintaining the highest standards of building safety, compliance, and sustainability across North Yorkshire. You’ll be a strategic leader, ensuring that all building work complies with Building Regulations and associated legislation while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
The role
As the Building Control Manager, you’ll be leading a diverse team of building control surveyors, from graduates to senior professionals, and managing the daily operations of the service. Your role will be crucial in shaping the future of building safety in North Yorkshire. You will:
- Lead and Develop a High-Performing Team: Manage, motivate, and support a team of building control surveyors, ensuring optimal performance through training, mentoring, and professional development. As a leader, you will drive a culture of excellence, accountability, and service delivery.
- Manage Complex Projects & Service Delivery: Oversee the day-to-day operational aspects of building control, ensuring that all building projects comply with safety regulations. You’ll make critical decisions around site inspections, plan checks, and enforcement actions to uphold regulatory standards.
- Strategic Leadership and Policy Development: Take a hands-on role in developing and implementing policies, strategies, and service plans that not only ensure compliance but enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency. You’ll also play a key role in shaping the growth of the Building Control service and exploring new commercial opportunities.
- Ensure Service Quality & Compliance: You’ll be responsible for maintaining the highest standards of compliance, with a focus on risk management, quality assurance, and customer satisfaction. As a key part of the senior leadership team, you’ll ensure that all projects meet North Yorkshire’s regulatory requirements.
What you will bring
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring a wealth of Building Control experience and strong management expertise. You’ll be someone who thrives in a leadership position, balancing strategic oversight with hands-on guidance for your team. Specifically, we’re looking for:
- Extensive Experience in Building Control Management: You’ll have significant experience in managing building control functions within a local authority setting, with a deep understanding of building regulations and legislative requirements.
- Proven Leadership and People Management Skills: You’ll have experience managing a team, developing their skills and performance, and ensuring high standards of service delivery. You should be comfortable with decision-making, performance appraisals, and staff development.
- Strategic Vision: You’ll bring a strategic approach to leadership, with a focus on continuous improvement, compliance, and service excellence. You’ll be able to manage competing priorities while driving change and innovation.
- Customer and Stakeholder Focus: A strong commitment to providing excellent customer service and building strong relationships with key stakeholders, including elected members, external agencies, and service-users.
- Excellent Communication and Negotiation Skills: You will be comfortable presenting complex technical issues in clear terms to non-technical stakeholders, as well as influencing and negotiating with senior managers.
