NY Highways are growing our External Works team. We have Highly Skilled Craftsperson positions open for individuals with hands-on highways experience. As a member of the External Works team, you will join a site-based team delivering specific projects across the different infrastructure in North Yorkshire – from busy towns to rural areas.
This is an excellent chance to become part of a team working on a diverse array of projects across North Yorkshire. These works supplement the guaranteed work that NY Highways delivers on behalf of North Yorkshire Council. As a result, we can offer a confirmed, long-term and secure portfolio of diverse works including major ongoing projects in Skipton, Harrogate and Scarborough.

As a Highly Skilled Craftsperson you will…
- Deliver a wide range of skilled highways maintenance tasks, including kerbing, drainage repairs, patching, ironwork renewal, modular paving, and installing street furniture.
- Apply your specialist expertise in areas such as stonemasonry, bricklaying, resurfacing, or road marking to carry out complex and high-quality works.
- Operate specialist tools and plant equipment safely and effectively, ensuring all work meets health and safety standards.
- Accurately complete risk assessments, record work and defects using handheld devices, and take responsibility for tools and equipment.
- Work collaboratively with your team and other stakeholders to ensure smooth and efficient project delivery.
To be successful in this role you will…
- Have proven experience in highways maintenance or construction, with specialist skills in at least one of the following: stonemasonry, bricklaying, kerbing, paving, resurfacing, or road marking.
- Hold a relevant Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience in highway maintenance.
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of health and safety practices, including risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Be confident using plant and equipment relevant to your area of expertise.
- Be a team player with strong communication skills and a flexible, proactive approach to work.
- Be willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including unsocial hours.
- Be committed to continuous learning, with a willingness to undertake training in areas such as traffic management, manual handling, and emergency first aid.
- Hold or be willing to obtain training in operated plant such as 360 excavator, dumper, roller etc.
NY Highways provides highways services across North Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. From road maintenance to street lighting and road signs and pavement repairs, we operate in close partnership with North Yorkshire Council combining a commercial focus with public sector values including delivering highway civil engineering & infrastructure projects.
We are looking to lead the way in Highway innovation whilst developing and rewarding our workforce. With the responsibility of a network of roads that stretch for almost 5800 miles and a team of around 250 experienced professionals, there isn’t much we don’t know about highway maintenance. Our aims are supported by our staff who have years of industry experience and knowledge.
Since launching, we have invested in our people and technology – from promoting staff and training the next generation of Operatives, Mechanics, Electricians and Surveyors via apprenticeships to adopting the latest technology and a strong commitment to Quality and Environmental principles.
