About Apple TV Sports
The ASE Live Stream Engineering team powers the live sports experience on the Apple TV app, delivering high-quality, reliable streams for events like MLS Season Pass, Friday Night Baseball, and, starting in 2026, Formula 1 in the US. We are looking for a Live Reliability Streaming Engineer to join our team and play a critical role in shaping the future of live sports streaming.
As a Live Reliability Streaming Engineer, you will be a key contributor to the design, implementation, and operation of our live streaming platform, ensuring exceptional quality and reliability for millions of viewers. You will leverage your expertise in broadcast engineering and IP video delivery to solve complex challenges, optimise workflows, and drive innovation across the entire live streaming ecosystem. You will configure and tune systems, lead investigations into technical issues, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver world-class live sports experiences. This role will require after-hours weekend support.
Responsibilities
- Support operational teams for live streaming services.
- Setup and maintain live encoding and broadcast workflows.
- Troubleshoot complex partner and vendor integrations.
- Troubleshoot realtime live video delivery issues, under real-time pressure.
- Work with cross-functional client teams to ensure live video features are performing as expected.
- Work with operations, production and business teams to collect requirements for new infrastructure buildouts.
- Work with operations teams to troubleshoot video delivery and live workflow issues.
- Create, maintain and execute on playbooks, manage RCAs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong understanding of video production and remote production engineering.
- Experience with live encoding, video transport and/or cloud-based infrastructure.
- Experience in live broadcast engineering support and on-air production systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work with and lead multiple projects, teams, and timelines.
- Strong understanding of broadcast transport technologies.
- Strong understanding of live HLS encoding technologies.
- Familiar with SCTE-35/104 and SCTE-224/ESNI.
- Command line operations and/or experience using scripting languages (bash, python, other) to solve operational and technical challenges in production workflows.
- Ability to distill complex engineering solutions to production, business and product teams.
- Experience analysing system logs.
- Familiar with RESTful API utilization and debugging.
- Familiarity with: 4k, HDR and ATMOS in live transmission and streaming environments.
- Live streaming encoding technologies (e.g., AWS Elemental MediaLive, Harmonic, ATEME).
- IP networks for video transport (J2K, JPXS, MPEG, SRT, HLS Compression Protocols).
- Cloud-based video workflows and platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- AWS training and/or certification.
