The LPN is responsible for performing a variety of nursing care, patient activities, and supportive services to ensure patient comfort and well-being, in accordance with physicians' orders and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities:
- Perform basic nursing care and patient procedures as required.
- Participate in conferences and serve on committees as requested.
- Observe, report, and document changes in patient condition, observations, complaints, and nursing care in the patient chart.
- Engage in patient and family health education as needed.
- Provide a safe and secure environment for patients.
- Assist with diagnostic and therapeutic treatments.
- Administer I.V.F. as per state Nurse Practice Act.
- Check, irrigate, and maintain drainage tubes.
- Insert N/G tubes after training (KY & VA).
- Administer tube feedings.
- Perform suctioning according to hospital policy.
- Respond in emergencies and participate in code team activities.
- Perform catheterizations and maintain catheter care.
- Administer medications via oral, intra-muscular, intradermal, subcutaneous, I.V., PB, and approved medications.
- Administer I.V.P. medications in Virginia.
- Care for patients on oxygen therapy and analyze oxygen concentrations.
- Administer respiratory treatments (I.P.P.B.).
- Apply sterile and unsterile compresses and bandages.
- Assist with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
- Test urine for sugar, acetone, pH; weigh patients; record vital signs.
- Care for patients in isolation.
- Assist with examinations and pap smears.
- Implement post-operative care: cough, deep breathing, turning, vital signs.
- Prepare patients for surgery, including pre-op checklists.
- Apply ace bandages, traction, hot water bottles, and ice caps.
- Record intake and output.
- Collect specimens: blood, urine, stool, sputum.
- Provide post-mortem care and transportation.
- Administer enemas: retention, cleansing, therapeutic, colonic, irrigation.
- Maintain cleanliness, safety, and efficiency in nursing practice.
- Respond appropriately in emergencies, including CPR, as directed.
- Assist with the care and security of patient valuables.
- Check narcotics and barbiturates, report discrepancies, and complete incident reports.
- Care for patients with radium and assist with radium removal.
- Prepare used equipment for sterilization and maintain storage.
- Follow hospital policies for documentation and communication of orders.
- Monitor blood glucose levels.
- Collect data for Quality Improvement initiatives.
- Use universal precautions at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program.
- Maintain current licensure in the practicing state.
- Complete the I.V. Therapy Course successfully.
- Possess technical skills in specialized nursing fields (preferred).
- Have 6 months to 1 year of on-the-job training to achieve proficiency in duties.
