About the Role

This is a commercially focused, customer-facing role with full responsibility for the acquisition and development of new client accounts across the UK & Ireland.

The Business Development Manager (BDM) will build and manage a personal portfolio of new customers, with a clear focus on strategically targeted customers — including all Maersk integrated products; E-Commerce, Ocean, Air, LCL and broader Logistics & Services.

Operating on a national basis, the BDM will play an active role in identifying, qualifying and pursuing new business opportunities — transforming market opportunities into long-term commercial success for Maersk.

Key Responsibilities

  • New Customer Development
  • Deliver Maersk E-Commerce, Air, LCL and Ocean Logistics & Services volume targets from a new customer portfolio through the sale of Maersk product solutions.
  • Develop compelling value propositions and sales enablement materials tailored to the UK & Ireland market.
  • Identify, qualify and develop new commercial opportunities nationally.
  • Develop and execute complex, consultative solutions that address identified customer pain points, collaborating with product owners to meet customer expectations.
  • Ensure that all contracts, agreements and SOPs for customers within the portfolio comply with Maersk guidelines, are comprehensively documented and communicated to relevant Maersk L&S parties.
  • Pipeline & Commercial Strategy
  • Build and manage a high-quality pipeline, ensuring accurate forecasting, opportunity tracking and a sufficiently robust CRM
  • Open Sales Pipeline to deliver Closed Won targets.
  • Create and maintain customer strategies with a clear focus on customer pain points and needs, aligned with Maersk products, services and predefined trade lanes.
  • Manage the 'upselling' process within the assigned national territory, comprehensively pursuing non-controlled shippers and network-derived sales leads.
  • (if assigned) Monitor contracted opportunities and ensure expected volumes convert into realised business, maintaining visibility of pipeline value, revenue and gross profit performance.

  • Ensure all commercial processes, guidelines, tools and procedures are adopted consistently and without exception.
  • Execute periodically introduced sales campaigns to drive focused development of the sales portfolio within the national territory.
  • Participate in customer meetings, discovery workshops, tenders and commercial negotiations.
  • Provide market intelligence, customer insights and competitive analysis to support Maersk growth initiatives.
  • Work closely with Product, Pricing, Finance and Commercial Strategy teams to support successful opportunity conversion.
  • Support customer implementations, onboarding activities and go-live readiness.
  • KPIs and objectives agreed on an annual basis in conjunction with the direct line manager.

Person Specification

Experience & Knowledge

  • Proven experience in a customer-facing commercial or business development role, ideally within the logistics or supply chain industry.
  • Strong understanding of logistics and forwarding products, solutions and terminology within the UK market, including E-Commerce.
  • Demonstrated success in building pipelines and converting opportunities into sustainable, long-term revenue growth.
  • Experience of working across a matrix, multicultural organisation, building strong relationships and networks both locally and internationally.
  • Existing knowledge and network within the UK freight forwarding, logistics or e-commerce market would be highly advantageous.

  • Proven track record of targeting, pursuing and winning opportunities through both personal and collaborative selling efforts.
  • Well-developed communication, persuasiveness, influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Strong consultative selling and questioning skills, with a demonstrable ability to handle the most common customer objections.
  • Commercially astute with a strong understanding of pricing, margin, revenue and profitability drivers.
  • Strong analytical and forecasting capabilities, with a structured approach to pipeline management.
  • Ability to own opportunities end-to-end, from initial customer engagement through implementation and volume ramp-up.
  • Self-motivated and performance driven, comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy across a national territory.
