We are seeking a skilled and motivated Manufacturing Engineer to join our maintenance team within a fast‑paced microelectronics manufacturing environment. This role is critical in supporting the reliability, performance, and continuous operation of a wide range of laser systems and associated production equipment used throughout the manufacturing process. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair, calibration, and safe operation of laser equipment ranging from legacy systems through to modern state‑of‑the‑art platforms. Working closely with engineering, production, and health & safety teams, the Laser Engineer will play a key role in minimising downtime, improving equipment performance, and ensuring compliance with all safety standards and procedures. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer who enjoys hands‑on technical problem solving in a highly specialised manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Laser Systems Maintenance & Support
- Carry out routine preventative maintenance on a variety of industrial laser systems and associated equipment.
- Diagnose faults and perform repairs on laser systems spanning multiple generations of technology, from legacy systems through to current platforms.
- Support installation, commissioning, calibration, and validation activities for new and existing laser equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports, and documentation in accordance with company procedures.
- Liaise with equipment manufacturers and external service providers where necessary.
- Fault Finding & Repair
- Perform detailed electrical and electronic fault finding to component level.
- Troubleshoot complex electro‑mechanical, optical, and control system issues.
- Identify root causes of equipment failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability and uptime.
- Assist in developing preventative maintenance strategies and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Laser Safety & Compliance
- Act as, or support, the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) function within the business.
- Ensure laser systems operate in compliance with relevant safety regulations, standards, and internal procedures.
- Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and audits relating to laser equipment and maintenance activities.
- Promote a strong safety culture across the engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Electrical Inspection & Testing
- Carry out inspection and testing of electrical equipment in accordance with applicable regulations and company procedures.
- Undertake PAT testing activities and maintain associated records.
- Support compliance activities relating to electrical installations and equipment certification.
- General Engineering Support
- Work collaboratively with manufacturing, process engineering, and maintenance teams to minimise production downtime.
- Participate in continuous improvement and equipment upgrade projects.
- Provide technical guidance and support to colleagues and operators where required.
- Ensure all work is completed in line with quality standards, engineering best practices, and health & safety requirements.
- Conduct software backups on critical equipment.
Qualifications
- HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent qualification.
- City & Guilds Level 2/3 for the Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment, PAT Testing qualification and practical experience.
- Experience in routine maintenance, fault finding and repair of laser systems.
- Experience working with laser systems ranging from legacy equipment to current technologies.
- Electronics fault‑finding and repair capability.
- Good understanding of electrical and electronic systems.
- Understanding of health & safety legislation and best practices within manufacturing or engineering environments.
- Experience within microelectronics, semiconductor, or high‑precision manufacturing industries would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of electro‑mechanical systems, automation, or control systems would be advantageous.
