About the Company

My client is an established principal contractor with over 20 years’ experience, specialising in cladding remediation and façade regeneration projects across Great Britain. Due to continued growth, they are introducing this brand-new position into the business to strengthen their in-house temporary works and structural engineering capability.

Overall Purpose of the Role

The Temporary Works Structural Engineer will provide specialist expertise in temporary works design, structural assessment and wind load calculations, ensuring all temporary structures across remediation and construction projects are safe, compliant and technically robust. This role focuses heavily on wind loading assessments, scaffold load analysis, hoarding design review and temporary access systems, particularly in relation to their interaction with existing structures and compliance with CDM 2015 and Building Safety Act requirements. You will also play a key role in maintaining the Golden Thread of Information, ensuring full digital traceability and regulatory compliance throughout all project phases.

Core Responsibilities

  • Temporary Works Design & Verification
  • Lead the design verification and approval of temporary works across multiple projects.
  • Ensure compliance with BS 5975:2019, PAS 8812:2016 and relevant British Standards.
  • Review scaffold loading and assess structural impact on superstructures, substructures, podium decks and adjacent assets.
  • Evaluate temporary works effects on buildings, external grounds and ancillary structures under static and dynamic load conditions.
  • Design and specify appropriate spreaders, base plates and load transfer solutions to ensure safe load distribution.
  • Review and approve hoarding and welfare structure designs in accordance with current standards.
  • Generate and verify TG20:21 compliance sheets using recognised industry software.
  • Wind Loading & Structural Analysis
    • Undertake detailed wind load calculations in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4 (Eurocode).
    • Define building zones accurately and assess all elevations and façade elements.
    • Account for recesses, projections and architectural features affecting wind behaviour.
    • Analyse complex wind phenomena including funnelling effects and local acceleration.
    • Produce structured calculation packs suitable for third-party review, Building Control and Building Safety Regulator submissions.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
    • Fulfil Designer duties under CDM Regulations 2015, including risk identification, mitigation strategies and residual risk communication.
    • Prepare comprehensive technical documentation including calculations, drawings and specifications.
    • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act and HSE guidance.
    • Provide site-based technical support during installation, inspection and removal of temporary works.
  • Leadership & Continuous Improvement
    • Champion the Golden Thread of Information across all assigned projects.
    • Mentor junior engineers and promote knowledge sharing within the Design & Quality function.
    • Contribute to performance management and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Represent temporary works expertise in client, project and cross-departmental meetings.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving standards and regulatory requirements.

    Collaboration

    You will work closely with:

    • Internal departments including Commercial, Health & Safety, Contracts, Procurement and Design.
    • Building Control and the Building Safety Regulator.
    • Clients, consultants, architects and structural specialists.
    • All relevant project stakeholders.

    Skills & Essential Qualifications

    • BEng or MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
    • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with ICE or IStructE.
    • MSc in Temporary Works & Construction Method Engineering.
    • CITB Temporary Works Coordinator certification.
    • CSCS Black Card (Professional level).
    • Extensive knowledge of BS 5975:2019 and PAS 8812:2016.
    • Strong understanding of CDM Regulations 2015 Designer duties.
    • Proficiency in structural analysis software such as STAAD.Pro, SAP2000 or Robot.
    • Significant experience in complex wind loading calculations, including façade zone differentiation and Building Control submission requirements.
