We are currently recruiting for an Electrical Design Engineer on behalf of a bespoke electrical and mechanical engineering company who manage the complete mechanical engineering process including design, manufacture and commissioning. They mainly work within Water Utilities. Operating over 35 years, they are a family owned organisation who have gained a reputable name within the industry for their high-quality work and excellent customer service. They have a client base which boasts some of the biggest names in the engineering sector. Mainly working within the Waste Water and Clean Water industries they provide a range of services including surveying through to design, fabrication, installation and implementation.
The Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, development and delivery of electrical systems that support wastewater and wastewater treatment infrastructure. This role plays a key part in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of treatment plants, pumping stations, and associated assets. The engineer will produce high-quality, detailed electrical designs, including power distribution, control systems and instrumentation layouts, while working closely with multidisciplinary teams to integrate mechanical and process requirements. Designs must meet relevant industry standards, client specifications and regulatory requirements specific to the water sector.
This is a permanent position, based at the Reading office, paying £50k - £60k per annum. It is working Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. They offer the option of hybrid working with 2 days a week in the office. Perks include pension, 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, training & development etc.
Responsibilities
- Produce electrical drawings and documentation such as single line diagrams, cable block diagrams, load schedules, control philosophies, termination drawings and cable schedules.
- Developing detailed electrical designs including distribution, control systems and instrumentation.
- Carry out electrical calculations (e.g cable sizing, load calculations, voltage drop, fault levels, protection coordination).
- Specify and select electrical equipment, including MCCs, motors, drives (VSD’s) and field instrumentation.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant BS standards, client specifications and WIMES.
- Support the development of control philosophies and interface with PLC/SCADA Systems.
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOP’s and design risk assessments to ensure safety and compliance.
- Liaise with clients, contractors and suppliers to ensure technical requirements are met.
- Provide technical support during procurements, manufacturing, installation and commissioning phases.
- Assist Project Managers with reviewing supplier and subcontractor designs and documentation.
- Conduct site visits and surveys to gather data and support project delivery.
- Assist with commissioning, testing and troubleshooting of electrical systems onsite.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and ensure traceability of design changes.
- Work within project budgets and timelines, supporting efficient and cost-effective delivery.
- Assist with creating and maintaining design templates.
Skills & Attributes
- Water industry experience (preferred)
- 18th Edition Qualified or other relevant electrical qualification.
- Electrical HNC/HND (Degree Preferable)
- City and Guilds 2396 (Design, Erection and Verification)
- Experience on SLD’s, BCD’s, cable schedules, load schedules etc.
- Experience with software such as: Trimble (Amtech), Autodesk 2D and Microsoft packages.
- Ability to work independently and unsupervised.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Hard working and an eye for detail.
