Are you a seasoned civil or structural engineer who loves the smell of saltwater and the challenge of complex marine infrastructure? This role gives you the chance to shape major shipyard and port projects across the UK and overseas, working alongside some of the sharpest minds in the maritime space.

The role involves taking a leading role in the design and delivery of maritime civil structures for ports and shipyards, working with steel, concrete and timber in line with relevant international design standards. You’ll be involved from first sketch through to construction – and sometimes decommissioning and reuse – making sure solutions are technically robust, buildable and commercially sound.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading design and analysis of quay walls, jetties, dry docks, floating docks, ship lifts and heavy-duty shipyard infrastructure.
  • Undertaking inspections and condition surveys of existing maritime structures and producing succinct technical reports.
  • Preparing and checking design calculations, 3D models and drawings before they go anywhere near a client or contractor.
  • Producing Bills of Quantities, specifications and contract documentation for maritime works.
  • Acting as Project Manager on small/medium projects or Technical Lead on larger, more complex multi-disciplinary schemes.
  • Providing day-to-day guidance and oversight to engineers, graduates, technicians and project support colleagues.
  • Presenting to clients and internal teams, clearly explaining engineering decisions and options in plain English.
  • Bringing commercial awareness to your projects – managing scope, programme and profitability, and contributing to bids and proposals.

You’ll work closely with planners, environmental specialists, geotechnical engineers and other disciplines, often across multiple offices and time zones, to deliver integrated port and shipyard solutions.

You’ll be joining a well-established, employee-owned international consultancy that blends engineering, design and advisory services with digital tools and emerging technology. Their mission is to deliver infrastructure that genuinely improves how societies function, and maritime is a critical part of that.

Highlights:

  • Large, highly respected maritime team delivering port and shipyard projects on multiple continents.
  • Strong track record in masterplanning, feasibility studies and detailed design for some of the world’s most complex ports.
  • Shipyard projects for commercial and defence clients run from a Southern UK “hub”, with frequent collaboration across the global business.
  • Culture that values technical excellence, knowledge sharing and giving senior engineers room to lead and influence.
  • Hybrid working is standard; you’ll split time between home, a local office and client/port visits as required.

What you’ll bring:

You’re an experienced civil/structural engineer who thrives on complex marine challenges and is comfortable taking ownership. You can see the bigger picture but are still obsessive about the details that keep infrastructure safe and serviceable.

You will likely have:

  • Significant experience delivering shipyard and heavy marine infrastructure: heavy-duty quays, dry docks, floating docks, ship lifts or similar.
  • Strong track record taking designs from concept through to construction-ready stage.
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng/BSc/MEng/MSc) and chartered or close to chartered with ICE or IStructE.
  • Solid background in the design of maritime structures and familiarity with relevant international standards and guidelines.
  • Confidence presenting to clients and stakeholders, and the ability to justify engineering decisions clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior engineers and supporting professional development (e.g. within ICE training schemes).
  • A collaborative, approachable style – you can work across disciplines and build trust with clients as a technical advisor.
  • Willingness to travel on occasion within the UK and internationally.

If you don’t tick every box but have strong maritime structural experience and the appetite to grow into the role, you’re encouraged to throw your hat in the ring.

What’s in it for you:

You’ll join a business that genuinely puts people first and gives senior engineers the freedom to shape their careers.

On offer:

  • Competitive base salary, performance-related bonus and comprehensive benefits.
  • Clear pathways for progression into specialist technical leadership, project leadership or people management – or a blend of all three.
  • Flexible working options, including hybrid and part-time patterns to suit your life outside work.
  • Support for professional development and chartership, plus opportunities to work on flagship international projects.
  • A culture that values work-life balance, autonomy and doing the right thing for clients and the wider community.

How to apply:

If you’re a senior maritime structural/civil engineer ready to take a leading role on high-impact shipyard and port projects, apply with your CV and a short note on your most relevant project experience. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted to discuss the role, team and projects in more detail.
