The PLC & Automation Engineer plays a key role in delivering reliable and well-integrated machine control systems, focusing on automation performance, commissioning, and technical support rather than pure software development. This role bridges control philosophy and real-world machine operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery and performance of automation systems across machinery and customer installations.
- Configure, adapt, and support PLC-based control systems (Siemens preferred).
- Work with existing PLC programs, making modifications and improvements where required.
- Support commissioning, testing, and system validation activities.
- Configure and support industrial drives, automation hardware, and tension control systems (e.g. Magpower or similar).
- Diagnose and resolve automation and control-related faults, both in-house and on customer sites.
- Interpret electrical schematics and control documentation to support system behaviour.
- Provide technical support during breakdowns, upgrades, and performance improvements.
- Support service teams during complex fault conditions or peak workloads.
- Liaise with suppliers on automation components and system integration topics.
- Communicate system functionality clearly with internal teams and customers.
Qualifications & Experience
- Engineering apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in Electrical, Controls, Automation, or Mechatronics.
- Practical experience working with PLC-controlled automation systems.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills within industrial control environments.
- Understanding of drives, automation hardware, and machine control systems.
Desirable (Training Can Be Provided)
- Siemens PLC exposure (configuration, modification, commissioning rather than full software ownership).
- Experience with tension control systems.
- Knowledge of machinery safety standards.
- Experience within machinery, material processing, or special-purpose equipment.
