Are you a hydrologist or hydromorphologist who enjoys solving complex water environment challenges? Do you thrive in a role that combines data analysis, hydraulic modelling, field investigation and project delivery? Are you looking for an opportunity to work across an exceptionally varied portfolio of restoration, water resources and environmental assessment projects while developing your technical and commercial skills within a supportive multidisciplinary team?
We’re looking for a Senior Hydromorphologist to join our growing Water Management team. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a collaborative group of hydromorphologists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists and environmental scientists delivering innovative, evidence-led solutions across the UK and Ireland.
Our team is involved in a wide range of projects including river, wetland and peatland restoration, sediment management, water resources assessments, drainage management, flood hydrology and wider environmental assessment work. The breadth of our workload means this role offers genuine variety, with opportunities to work across both desk-based technical analysis and field-based investigations throughout the project lifecycle.
We’re looking for someone with a strong scientific background and the ability to contribute immediately in at least one of our key specialist areas, ideally with experience in water resources, environmental flow, low flow/drought assessment or restoration-related hydrology and hydraulics. Experience across several specialist areas would be particularly valuable, but just as important is a willingness to continue developing your expertise across related disciplines such as peatland and wetland hydrology, flood hydrology, eco-hydrology, sediment management and nature-based solutions.
This role would suit someone with consultancy experience, but we would also welcome applications from candidates coming from academia, including those with a relevant PhD, provided they have some practical or commercial experience applying their research within a consultancy, industry, regulatory or project-based environment.
As a Senior Hydromorphologist, you’ll manage and deliver your own technical workstreams, undertake hydrological and hydraulic analyses, support multidisciplinary fieldwork, contribute to project management activities and help develop innovative solutions that balance environmental, technical and commercial objectives. You’ll work closely with Principal Consultants, who will provide support on broader strategic, commercial and team leadership matters while giving you the autonomy to manage projects and develop your client-facing skills.
You’ll need to bring:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Geography, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- A strong understanding of hydrological and hydromorphological processes and analyses.
- Excellent numerical and analytical skills, including experience with 1D hydraulic modelling using HEC-RAS or Flood Modeller.
- Good working knowledge of QGIS.
- Experience analysing and interpreting hydrological or hydraulic datasets and presenting findings to a professional standard.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to manage your own workload and deliver high-quality outputs to agreed deadlines.
- A proactive, organised and problem-solving approach to technical work.
It’s a bonus if you have:
- Experience in restoration optioneering and design.
- Experience with Natural Flood Management (NFM) or Nature Based Solutions (NBS).
- Experience in water resources assessments.
- Experience in peatland, wetland or flood hydrology/modelling.
- Experience with eco-hydrology.
- Experience with 1D-2D and/or 2D hydraulic modelling of river channels and floodplains.
- Experience in sediment management or drainage management.
- Experience using AutoCAD.
- Experience with Python or R, particularly in relation to hydraulic or hydrological analysis.
- Experience contributing to Drainage Assessments, Surface Water Management Plans, Flood Risk Assessments, Flood Risk Activity Permitting or related environmental assessments.
- Hydrometry, hydrological survey or geomorphological field survey experience.
- Experience supporting tender preparation, scope development or project costing.
- Experience in project or task management, including programme, resource or financial coordination.
- A Master’s degree or PhD in a related discipline.
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as CIWEM or BHS.
