About The Role

Are you an experienced water quality professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with project leadership? Do you thrive on interpreting complex data and turning it into clear, evidence‑led insight for clients? We’re looking for a Senior Consultant – Water Quality to join APEM’s growing Freshwater Quality team. This is a key role within the team, with a strong focus on project delivery, technical analysis and client engagement. You’ll work across a diverse portfolio of water and sediment quality projects, supporting clients to understand environmental challenges and design effective management solutions. While this role is primarily desk‑based, there will be opportunities to get involved in fieldwork where appropriate. We are also keen to hear from candidates with experience beyond freshwater, particularly in transitional and coastal environments, reflecting the breadth of work we deliver.

You’ll play a central role in managing projects from start to finish; from designing monitoring programmes and analysing data, through to reporting, client engagement and identifying future opportunities. Alongside this, you’ll support the development of junior team members and contribute to the continued growth of the Water Quality Division.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading and supporting the delivery of water and sediment quality projects
  • Managing multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery to time, budget and quality
  • Designing and costing monitoring programmes
  • Processing, analysing and interpreting environmental data
  • Producing high‑quality technical reports and presenting findings clearly to clients
  • Contributing to tenders, including technical writing and cost development
  • Building and maintaining strong client and stakeholder relationships
  • Mentoring and supporting graduate and consultant‑level team members
  • Identifying opportunities for follow‑on work and supporting business growth

What we’re looking for

You’ll need to bring:

  • Experience working in a commercial environmental consultancy at Senior level
  • Strong knowledge of water and sediment quality assessment and management
  • Experience across areas such as water quality impact assessment, catchment management, reservoir management, algal blooms or related fields
  • Proven ability to deliver high‑quality consultancy projects to time and budget
  • Strong data handling, analysis and interpretation skills
  • Experience designing monitoring programmes
  • Good understanding of the project lifecycle, including commercial aspects of delivery
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of key UK environmental legislation

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience in water quality modelling (e.g. SIMCAT)
  • Experience in transitional or coastal environments
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification
  • Chartered status or working towards professional accreditation

Next steps

We are focused on creating a diverse and inclusive team. If you can’t tick every box on our job description, then we are still keen to hear from you and are open to supporting your development. That may be working part time or supporting you to gain experience in a specific area – we are a growing company and are able to adapt roles to reflect individual skills. If you think you have what it takes to join our fast‑growing business, please apply immediately on our website. All we need is some basic information and your CV; we will review all applications quickly and will respond to all applicants.
