About The Role
Are you an experienced fluvial geomorphologist looking for a role where you can combine technical leadership, fieldwork, client engagement and business development? Do you want to work with a leading specialist consultancy on a diverse portfolio of projects that solve real-world environmental challenges? We’re looking for a Principal Geomorphologist to join our growing Hydromorphology team within APEM’s Water Management Division. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced geomorphologist to play a leading role in the continued growth and development of one of our core technical disciplines.
APEM has a leading position in the market for applied hydromorphology, delivering innovative and technically challenging projects across river restoration, sediment dynamics, wetland restoration, sediment management and Heavily Modified Water Body investigations. Working with water companies, regulators, developers and specialist teams across APEM, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your expertise to a wide variety of environmental challenges. This role offers genuine variety; combining technical delivery, fieldwork, client engagement, project leadership and commercial development. You’ll have the opportunity to shape project approaches, build trusted client relationships, contribute to tenders and help drive the continued growth of our geomorphology capability. You’ll also play an important role in developing others, mentoring Senior Consultants and Consultants and sharing your expertise within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.
What we’re looking for
- A MSc or above in Fluvial Geomorphology with relevant experience in a consultancy, regulatory or third sector environment; or a PhD in a relevant discipline with relevant industry experience
- Strong technical expertise in fluvial geomorphology, with an excellent practical understanding of geomorphological forms and processes
- Experience developing river restoration schemes across a range of river types and stages of design
- Practical fieldwork experience, including activities such as restoration appraisals, fluvial audits, physical habitat surveys or sediment sampling
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to apply geomorphological understanding to complex investigations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to engage with clients and multidisciplinary teams
- The ability to manage your own workload and deliver high-quality outputs to tight deadlines
- A full UK driving licence
It’s a bonus if you have:
- Experience managing multidisciplinary projects and delivering work to time and budget
- Experience mentoring or managing junior colleagues
- Experience preparing sediment management plans
- Awareness of UK legislation associated with water management
- Experience with hydraulic modelling tools such as HEC-RAS or FloodModeller
- Experience with sediment transport modelling
- CDM experience
- Experience using AutoCAD
