Are you an experienced statistician or data scientist looking to apply advanced analytics to real-world environmental challenges? Do you enjoy working with complex datasets and seeing your analysis influence meaningful decisions? We’re looking for a Senior Environmental Statistician to join our growing Water Data Science Team within APEM’s Water Science Division. Our team specialises in the collection, analysis and interpretation of environmental monitoring and geospatial data, supporting water and energy utilities and regulators across the UK. This is a technically stretching and impactful role. You’ll manage and deliver a portfolio of data-intensive projects, applying advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to complex spatio-temporal environmental datasets. Working closely with specialists in ecology, water quality, hydrology and fisheries, you’ll translate analytical outputs into clear, defensible insight that supports regulatory compliance, environmental planning and long-term resilience.

Whether your background is in consultancy, academia, research, industry or the public sector, this role offers the opportunity to apply strong analytical expertise within a collaborative, commercially focused environment. You’ll also contribute to the continued development of our analytical capability; improving workflows, supporting junior analysts and helping shape best practice in environmental data science.

What we’re looking for

  • A BSc or MSc in a relevant subject, and either a PhD or at least three years’ professional experience in an analytical role involving complex datasets
  • Strong proficiency in R programming, MS Excel and version control using GitHub
  • Experience analysing and modelling spatio-temporal data using statistical and/or machine learning techniques
  • Proven ability to manage and deliver projects to time, budget and quality standards
  • Excellent technical report writing skills
  • The ability to explain complex statistical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Confidence communicating professionally with clients and colleagues

It’s a bonus if you have:

  • Experience working in a commercial consultancy or client-facing environment
  • Experience contributing to proposals or research funding applications
  • Specialist expertise in Bayesian statistics, time series analysis or machine learning
  • Experience with RShiny, geospatial tools (ArcGIS or QGIS), SQL databases or Python
  • Awareness of UK environmental policy and regulatory frameworks
  • Membership of a relevant professional body
  • A valid driving licence

We are focused on creating a diverse and inclusive team. If you can’t tick every box on our job description, then we are still keen to hear from you and are open to supporting your development. That may be working part time or supporting you to gain experience in a specific area – we are a growing company and are able to adapt roles to reflect individual skills. If you think you have what it takes to join our fast-growing business, then please apply immediately on our website. All we need is some basic information and your CV; we will review all applications quickly and will respond to all applicants.
