Overview

Aspect Ecology, part of the APEM Group, is seeking a Principal Ecologist to lead and deliver a diverse portfolio of terrestrial ecology projects. The role combines fieldwork, technical oversight and project management with client engagement, the preparation of fee proposals, oversight of survey programmes, analysis of ecological field data, and production of high‑quality technical reports, while mentoring colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver a range of terrestrial ecology projects across the UK, including housing, retail, employment and renewable energy sites.
  • Prepare fee proposals, oversee survey programmes and manage ecological field data.
  • Produce written reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, EcIAs, BNG, protected species survey reports, and proof‑read others’ work.
  • Manage projects and motivate staff, including client liaison and management.
  • Travel across the UK, including overnight stays, and hold a full UK driving licence.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant professional experience in ecological consultancy or a closely related field (including public sector or conservation bodies).
  • Relevant degree and/or postgraduate qualification with a strong academic record.
  • Comprehensive experience with UK botanical and faunal identification.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of Phase1 Habitat and / or UK Habitat Classification surveys, as well as protected species surveys, mitigation, licensing and holding at least one protected species survey licence.
  • Capacity to produce concise, high‑quality written reports and proof‑read others’ work.
  • Experience in project management, staff leadership, client liaison and management.
  • Full UK driving licence.
