AP Education is seeking compassionate, child‑centred Alternative Provision Tutors to support learners across Gloucester from September.
We work with children and young people who require personalised educational support outside of mainstream education.
Many of our learners have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, anxiety, school avoidance, or other barriers to learning.
Our tutors play a vital role in helping students re‑engage with education, build confidence, and achieve positive outcomes.
The Role
We are looking for tutors who can deliver English, Maths and other core subjects across Key Stages 1–4, adapting lessons to meet each learner’s individual needs.
Each learner typically receives 10–15 hours of tuition per week, and tutors often support multiple learners, building timetables of 10–30 hours per week depending on availability and referrals.
Sessions usually take place between 9:00am and 4:00pm in learners’ homes, community venues or other agreed educational settings across Poole.
Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, personalised tuition tailored to individual learning needs.
- Teach core subjects across KS1–KS4.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with learners and families.
- Adapt teaching strategies for pupils with SEND and SEMH needs.
- Record learner progress and complete session feedback.
- Work collaboratively with AP Education and other professionals to achieve positive outcomes.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with children or young people with SEND.
- Minimum 2 years’ teaching experience within the English National Curriculum.
- Ability to teach core subjects across KS1–KS4.
- A genuinely child‑centred approach.
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
- Right to work in the UK.
- Access to reliable transport and willingness to travel within Poole.
Desirable Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Experience in alternative provision, tutoring or specialist education.
- Experience teaching Functional Skills or GCSE programmes.
- Understanding of trauma‑informed practice and relational approaches.
