Wirral Met College is committed to providing inclusive, highest-quality education and training, offering a diverse range of Further and Higher Education programmes to around 7,500 students each year. The Role

English and Maths are at the heart of our mission - vital to student progression, employability, and lifelong opportunity. Our new Head of English and Maths will lead the strategic and operational direction of these critical departments, ensuring every learner achieves their potential. As Head of English and Maths, you will take overall responsibility for the leadership, quality, and development of our GCSE, Functional Skills and adult provision in both subjects. You will be instrumental in driving improvements in teaching, curriculum innovation and student achievement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing strategic leadership and management of English and Maths across all college sites and provision types
  • Raising standards in teaching, learning, and assessment to ensure consistently high learner outcomes
  • Innovating the curriculum to meet learner needs, including effective delivery models for GCSE resits and adult learners
  • Leading a high-performing team of lecturers, support staff, and coordinators, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
  • Using data intelligently to drive interventions, track progress, and support individual learner success
  • Collaborating with cross-college teams, including vocational areas, to embed English and Maths into wider study programmes and apprenticeships
  • Representing the department internally and externally, building positive relationships with stakeholders, exam boards, and funding bodies

About You

Our successful candidate will have substantial leadership experience in English, Maths or both within an FE or post-16 education setting, with a proven track record of improving learner outcomes, particularly in GCSE and Functional Skills. Strong knowledge of Ofsted expectations, quality assurance and curriculum planning are key, as are inspirational leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop high-performing teams.
