We are currently recruiting for a Trade and Sanctions Associate to join our Environmental & Sanctions group in London.
DEPARTMENT PURPOSE
A&O Shearman\’s International Trade & Sanctions law team is one of the leading practices in this area. The team undertakes a broad mix of work in the following key areas:
- UK and EU Sanctions compliance advice
- Sanctions and trade law support across a broad range of corporate, finance and real estate transactions
- Export controls
- Anti‑bribery law
- FDI
- International public law
- Trade/WTO law
- Operational compliance advice
The team has a stellar reputation for advising clients on sophisticated and cutting‑edge legal issues, offering a truly integrated and multijurisdictional regulatory law service to help clients manage compliance risks and seize commercial opportunities in the fast‑moving environmental arena. Clients include Deutsche Bank, Mubadala, Reckitt, Imperial Brands, Prosus, TUI plc, Haleon and Macquarie.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drafting, reviewing and amending documentation
- Providing strategic guidance to clients
- Managing client expectations and project delivery appropriately
- Business development – develop a personal plan, assist with and implement the business development campaign
- Legal research
KEY REQUIREMENTS
- Qualified lawyer, ideally 2-5 PQE
- Previous experience of sanctions work is essential
- Strong technical knowledge of the legal framework surrounding several core areas
- Intellectual curiosity and versatility
- Self‑starter with the desire and ability to continuously acquire, build upon and share knowledge
- Detail‑focused and self‑motivated approach
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Excellent client relationship skills
- Experience operating at associate level within a complex international organisation
- Strong commercial/business acumen with the ability to deliver creative and pragmatic solutions and advice
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interfacing at all levels and building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Collaborative team player in a fast‑paced, intellectually rigorous environment
- Sound judgment, establishing a high level of credibility
