Job Summary: Develop, implement, and monitor safety policies, conduct risk assessments, provide training, inspect workplaces, investigate incidents, and ensure compliance with legislation to foster a safe environment, prevent harm, and promote a positive safety culture for employees, visitors, and contractors. Key duties include creating safety procedures, running emergency drills, reporting findings, and advising management on improvements and legal requirements.
Main Duties / Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement health and safety strategies, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct risk assessments, identify hazards, and implement control measures for all activities.
- Train staff on safe practices, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
- Perform regular site inspections and audits to ensure compliance.
- Investigate accidents, near misses, and report findings to management, maintain records of all incidents.
- Ensure adherence to relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation.
- Provide expert advice to management, staff, and external bodies on H&S matters.
- Mentor project teams on CDM2015.
- Present statistics, reports, and updates to project teams.
- Ensure that the business is fulfilling its duties under Health and Safety legislation.
- Promote a positive health and safety culture within the business.
- Assist the project teams with preparation of all statutory documentation.
- Monitor the health and safety performance of sub-contractors.
- Chair health and safety meetings.
- Produce reports on the performance of the projects.
Skills:
- Excellent written (reports, policies) and verbal skills (training, engaging stakeholders).
- Identifying hazards, evaluating risks, and developing control measures.
Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of relevant laws (like HASAWA, RIDDOR, COSHH, PUWER) and keeping up to date.
- Creating and implementing safety policies, procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Recording accidents, investigating root causes, and recommending improvements.
Experience:
- Working in a construction environment and understanding the build process.
- Experience in CDM2015 and other Health and Safety regulations.
Behaviour:
- Diplomacy, empathy, and the ability to work with diverse groups, from frontline staff to senior management.
- Thoroughness in inspections, record-keeping, and identifying hazards.
- Convincing others to prioritize safety and adhere to standards.
