Overview
The Histopathology Department at Dorset County Hospital is looking to recruit a well-motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our friendly team as a Senior Biomedical Support Worker. The post is permanent, full time on pay band 3, reporting to the Biomedical Scientists and Histopathology Laboratory Manager. Dorset County Hospital Foundation NHS Trust is the leading provider of healthcare in West Dorset, and the Histopathology department is UKAS accredited to ISO15189 (2022).
Main duties
• Join a team of approximately 25 staff committed to delivering a high-quality diagnostic service.
• Work in a laboratory environment assisting with pathology dissection, machine maintenance, stock control, simple tissue embedding and microtomy, and other laboratory duties.
• Liaise with Medical Secretaries, Consultant Histopathologists, Biomedical Support Workers, Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists, and communicate with other hospital service users.
Qualifications and Experience
- Essential – Education to GCSEs or A Levels (science subject); HNC or NVQ in a science subject may be considered.
- – Evidence of recent employment in a pathology lab (preferably histopathology).
- – Willingness to undergo relevant training to ensure knowledge of Histology techniques.
- Essential – Experience in NHS diagnostic laboratory support work; ability to perform embedding/microtomy; effective communication with staff; adherence to SOPs and policies; ability to meet deadlines; understanding of COSHH and risk assessments.
- Essential – Skills, Abilities & Knowledge: knowledge of routine histopathology processes; accurate transcription of information; written and verbal communication with service users and staff; ability to plan, prioritise and supervise/train staff; ability to work independently and in a team; data entry into IT systems.
- Desirable – Ability to work under pressure in a calm, methodical manner; awareness of own limitations and when to seek advice to minimise downtime or resolve technical problems.
