Applications are invited for the post of Respiratory Consultant at Dorset County Hospital. The department has recently expanded into the Dorset Lung Cancer Screening Programme and Dorset Sleep Service. We offer a comprehensive pulmonary function laboratory with advanced diagnostics including spirometry, plethysmography, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, arterial blood gas analysis, and sleep studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake outpatient clinics in Dorchester and community hospitals.
- Undertake ward rounds on the respiratory inpatients and supervise resident staff on the wards.
- Perform work in General Internal Medicine on the wards, including weekday evening post‑take ward rounds and weekend cover, approximately 1:9.
- Attend multidisciplinary team meetings in lung cancer, ILD and sleep.
- Perform regular bronchoscopy, EBUS, and pleural procedures.
- Work with the Dorset Adult Integrated Respiratory Service (DAIRS).
- Contribute to education and training of other staff.
- Support the respiratory team and the Trust by contributing to professional activities, service development, clinical governance and the Trust’s strategic aims.
- Contribute to the physiology‑led Sleep Apnoea service with MDT for cases with additional medical issues and reporting; medical sleep clinics are for cases with non‑standard sleep‑related breathing disorders.
- Support the delivery of the Lung Cancer Screening Programme.

- Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum

- Working pattern: Full‑time, 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off ward per 4‑week cycle.

Person Specification – Essential
- Higher medical qualification – MRCP or overseas equivalent.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights.
- Five years clinical experience in Respiratory medicine.
- Experience demonstrating potential to cope with the demands of a DGH‑based Consultant.
- Evidence of leadership and service development.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships and team working.
- Knowledge of and participation in clinical governance and audit.
- Knowledge of principles of research and evidence of involvement.
- Evidence of teaching experience and communication skills.
- Current management training and organisational skills appropriate for the post.
