About the role

Anthropic is seeking a Policy Counsel to support our public policy and legal initiatives at the intersection of AI technology and regulation. As a member of our legal team, you’ll work cross-functionally to navigate emerging policy challenges and help build and advocate for frameworks that promote responsible AI development. This is an exceptional opportunity to tackle novel legal and policy questions while contributing directly to the future of AI governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development of AI governance frameworks that align with evolving regulations, industry best practices, and global standards.
  • Monitor and analyze emerging legislative and regulatory developments related to AI.
  • Provide legal analysis and advice to the External Affairs team and other Public Policy stakeholders.
  • Partner with Public Policy and technical teams in developing practical policy guidance that is informed by a deep understanding of our products.
  • Assist in drafting policy positions and proposals and advocacy materials.

Requirements

  • Law degree and qualification to practice law in a relevant EMEA jurisdiction.
  • Experience with policy, regulatory, or government affairs work, whether in government, at a technology company, a law firm, or a policy organization.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make complex legal and technical concepts accessible to non-legal audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work through ambiguous policy questions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ years of relevant legal experience.
  • Experience working on complex technology policy issues across AI/ML policy, data privacy, copyright, or technology regulation.
  • Familiarity with EMEA legislative and regulatory processes, including experience with national-level advocacy.
  • Experience drafting policy positions, comment letters, or regulatory submissions.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly understand AI concepts and translate them into policy contexts.
  • Interest in government affairs matters and a commitment to responsible AI development.
  • A collaborative, humble approach and the ability to work effectively across diverse teams.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.

Compensation

The annual compensation range for this role is $1 - $2 USD.

Logistics

  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.
  • Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position.
  • Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
  • Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas. However, we aren’t able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. If we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to obtain a visa.
