This is a critical team which supports Anthropic’s safety mission – we believe that the best safety research is empirical, and that it is crucial that safety research be done on models that are as close to the frontier as possible – and its commercial mission, by creating the best models for our customers.

Anthropic is seeking managers for multiple teams within Training. In this highly bespoke role, you would work closely with a Training research tech lead, and the two of you would be jointly responsible for leading the team and ultimately ensuring its success.

  • Problem-solving on an unprecedented scale that requires creativity and collaboration
  • Work alongside and learn from world-class researchers who are the best in their field and have deep technical expertise in a wide variety of domains

Responsibilities:

  • Own people management, cross-team collaboration, and project management for a team of researchers
  • Support your direct reports as a people manager - conducting productive 1:1s, skillfully offering feedback, running performance management, facilitating tough but needed conversations, and modeling excellent interpersonal skills
  • Coordinate with other teams to make sure researchers aren’t blocked
  • Ensure that the team's prioritization and work streams are aligned with its goals
  • Manage day-to-day execution of the team’s work
  • Unblock your reports when they are stuck, and help get them whatever resources they need to be successful
  • Work with the team to up level their project management skills, and act as a project management leader and counselor
  • Coach and develop your reports to decide how they would like to advance in their careers and help them do so
  • Run the team’s recruiting efforts, in concert with the research lead

  • Have a passion for and/or experience working with advanced AI systems, and feel strongly about ensuring these systems are developed safely
  • Have a minimum of 1 year of prior management or equivalent experience
  • Have some technical or science-based knowledge or expertise
  • Have basic familiarity in deep learning, AI, and pretraining research, or a desire to learn
  • Have previous direct experience in machine learning, but this is not required

The expected salary range for this position is:

Annual Salary: $315,000—$510,000 USD

Logistics

  • Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
  • US visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate; operations roles are especially difficult to support. But if we make you an offer, we will make every effort to get you into the United States, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
