About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, technically strong and hands-on MEP Director to lead our Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) function across major construction projects.
This is a senior leadership role combining strategic direction with direct involvement in project delivery. The successful candidate will oversee the full MEP lifecycle, from pre-construction and design development through installation, testing, commissioning and handover, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.
The ideal candidate will take a proactive, delivery-focused approach, working closely with project directors, site teams, engineers, designers and subcontractors to resolve technical challenges, improve coordination and drive performance across multiple projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the MEP across multiple projects, ensuring delivery in line with programme, budget, quality and health and safety requirements.
- Maintain a hands-on approach, actively engaging with project and site teams to resolve technical issues, design discrepancies, coordination clashes and installation challenges.
- Oversee MEP design development, reviews, technical queries (RFIs), technical submittals and change management, ensuring designs are coordinated, buildable and compliant.
- Ensure effective integration of MEP works with architectural, structural and other construction activities, minimising delays, clashes and rework.
- Identify opportunities for value engineering, design optimisation and improved system performance without compromising quality or compliance.
- Provide technical leadership and support to the Senior MEP Manager and wider MEP team.
- Maintain a visible presence on project sites, monitoring installation progress, workmanship, quality and compliance with approved drawings, specifications and methodologies.
- Coordinate with construction, design, planning and commercial teams to address risks, resolve interface issues and maintain project progress.
- Oversee MEP subcontractor performance, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, inspection and test plans, and project quality standards.
- Lead and monitor testing, commissioning and integrated systems testing, ensuring activities are properly planned and completed to programme.
- Drive the resolution of defects and outstanding works, ensuring systems are safe, compliant and fully operational at handover.
- Take ownership of MEP budgets, cost control, forecasting and financial performance across projects.
- Monitor variations, changes in scope, subcontractor costs and commercial risks, working closely with commercial and quantity surveying teams to manage claims and improve profitability.
- Identify opportunities to reduce costs, improve productivity and minimise rework without compromising technical standards or quality.
- Oversee MEP procurement, including specialist systems, materials and subcontract packages, ensuring technical compliance, value for money and programme alignment.
- Support subcontractor selection, tender evaluation, negotiations and performance management, while monitoring long-lead items and supply chain risks.
- Contribute to tender submissions and proposals, reviewing MEP scope, technical assumptions, exclusions, delivery risks and commercial viability.
- Support estimating, value engineering and project delivery strategies to strengthen the company's MEP capability and market position.
- Promote a strong health, safety and quality culture across all MEP activities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable UK legislation, Building Regulations, relevant British Standards, project specifications and statutory requirements.
- Oversee technical risks, non-conformances, defects and corrective actions, promoting continuous improvement and sustainable, energy-efficient solutions where appropriate.
- Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing MEP team comprising managers, engineers, designers and site personnel.
- Manage recruitment, resource planning, performance management and succession planning.
- Establish clear responsibilities and promote a collaborative, accountable and solutions-oriented culture across projects and departments.
Behaviour
- Excellent team player whilst also having the ability to work independently on their own initiative.
- Maintaining a hands-on approach and eager to learn and improve
- Excellent time management skills, with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
- Ability to encourage and support junior members of the MEP Team.
