AI is moving beyond experimentation and into real-world deployment. Our client is a rapidly growing defence technology business delivering advanced AI, machine learning and Large Language Model solutions across critical national security and defence programmes. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join their Newcastle team. This is an opportunity to work on genuinely challenging problems where AI is being applied to deliver real operational impact.

The Role

You'll work alongside software engineers, data engineers and AI specialists to design, build and deploy machine learning solutions in production environments. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and deploying Machine Learning and AI solutions
  • Building and integrating LLM-powered applications and workflows
  • Evaluating model performance and mitigating failure modes
  • Developing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions
  • Testing, troubleshooting and improving AI systems
  • Contributing to technical standards and best practices
  • Supporting the delivery of cutting-edge defence and AI programmes

What We're Looking For

  • Strong Python development experience
  • Solid understanding of Machine Learning fundamentals and statistical methods
  • Experience working with LLMs and Transformer architectures
  • Knowledge of LLM evaluation and optimisation techniques
  • Experience with RAG frameworks and modern AI tooling
  • Strong problem-solving skills and engineering mindset

Desirable:

  • Defence or National Security experience
  • AI Safety, Explainable AI or AI Security knowledge
  • Edge or air-gapped deployments
  • AWS, Azure or GCP experience
  • MLOps and production AI deployment experience
