We are currently seeking an Applied AI Engineer to design, build, and deploy AI-enabled systems in defence and other highly regulated environments, working hands‑on to take AI systems into production with a focus on LLM‑based applications, robustness, and security across real‑world systems.
What you’ll work on:
- Integrating AI components (including LLMs) into production applications and workflows
- Designing and implementing RAG (Retrieval‑Augmented Generation) systems
- Evaluating LLM behavior, identifying failure modes, and implementing mitigation strategies
- Testing and debugging non‑deterministic AI systems in production
- Making pragmatic decisions on when to use AI vs deterministic or statistical approaches
- Working with CI/CD pipelines, IaC, version control, and automated testing practices
- Embedding AI‑assisted development tools while maintaining strong standards of security, correctness, and oversight
What we need from you:
- Experience in defence, national security, or a similarly regulated environment
- Background in a consulting or client‑facing engineering role
- Strong software engineering fundamentals (Git, CI/CD, IaC, testing, containers)
- Practical experience with AI systems, including LLM behavior and architectures
- Evaluation techniques and failure mode analysis
- Experience with RAG and applied AI system design
- Strong understanding of AI limitations and appropriate use cases
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Eligibility for UK SC‑level security clearance
What’s in it for you:
- Ownership from day one – meaningful responsibility on live delivery
- High‑impact work – problems with real operational consequence
- Fast‑paced development – steep learning curve in a high‑calibre environment
- Influence and shape – opportunity to help define a growing consulting practice
- International exposure – UK, US, and European engagements
