Lead Technologist – Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

Location: Chelmsford (Hybrid: 2 days onsite, 3 remote)

Salary: Up to £85,000 + 10% bonus

Hours: Full-time, 37 hours/week

As a Lead Technologist in AI & ML, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of intelligent systems across a wide range of domains, from computer vision and NLP to reinforcement learning and signal processing. This is a senior leadership position for a seasoned expert who combines deep technical expertise with strategic vision and mentoring capabilities.

You’ll lead large-scale research programmes, assure the quality of technical outputs, and guide the development of innovative solutions that address complex challenges in defence, security, and beyond. You’ll also engage with academic institutions, contribute to proposal development, and influence the direction of AI research within a highly collaborative and mission-driven environment. This is a rare opportunity to lead at the intersection of science, engineering, and national impact.

What You’ll Do:

• Lead and oversee the successful delivery of complex, large-scale AI/ML projects.
• Mentor and guide a team of expert researchers, fostering technical excellence and innovation.
• Initiate and steer cutting-edge research efforts, identifying opportunities for impactful advancements.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across defence, space, and commercial sectors to align research with strategic goals.

What You’ll Bring:

• PhD in AI/ML or a related field, with over 10 years of experience in advanced research and development.
• Demonstrated leadership in R&D and engineering assurance across multidisciplinary teams.
• Deep expertise in areas such as reinforcement learning, natural language processing, large language models, computer vision, or signal processing.
• Exceptional communication and proposal development skills, with a track record of securing and delivering high-impact projects.
