The Role – Data Architect (Manager Level)
The Data Architect position is a senior leadership role within multidisciplinary delivery teams. As a Data Architect, you will define end-to-end data architecture for complex programmes, providing architectural authority, technical leadership, and governance across delivery.
The Data Architect will work closely with senior stakeholders, engineers, and fellow architects to ensure data solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned to agreed principles and standards. This role is suited to experienced Data Architects who can operate at both strategic and hands-on levels, influencing outcomes while supporting high-quality delivery.
Locations for this Data Architect role include London, Bristol, or Manchester, with flexibility required to support client delivery.
What You\’ll Be Doing as a Data Architect
As a Data Architect, you will:
- Define data architecture for high-profile, public-facing programmes across government and private sector environments
- Own data strategy, data migration approach, data integration approach, and data design for complex client engagements
- Analyse and understand existing live systems, applications, and data landscapes
- Document scope, context, constraints, and architectural decisions
- Define and govern architectural standards, principles, and guidelines
- Ensure architectural compliance throughout build and deployment
- Create and maintain strategic enterprise data models
- Design solutions for distributed data storage, including microservices and big data platforms
- Support and govern technical delivery across teams
- Line manage, mentor, and develop engineers and other Data Architects
Key Responsibilities
- Provide architectural and technical leadership across delivery programmes
- Design solutions for structured and unstructured data
- Propose and assure solutions aligned to national infrastructure standards and frameworks
- Govern non-functional requirements including performance, scalability, resilience, and security
- Collaborate with delivery teams to resolve complex technical challenges
- Review solution designs and code to ensure architectural integrity
- Support continuous improvement and data architecture best practice
Key Requirements
The successful Data Architect will have a strong background in data architecture and software engineering, with experience leading teams and shaping enterprise-level solutions.
You will bring:
- Proven experience as a Data Architect or in a senior data-focused architecture role
- Active SC clearance held at the point of application
- Experience defining data strategy, data migration, and data integration approaches
- Hands-on experience when required using Java, Scala, or Python
- Strong experience with big data technologies
- Experience designing architectures on Microsoft Azure
- Experience with both open-source and vendor data platforms
- Strong understanding of architectural methodologies and design principles
- Experience designing microservices-based architectures
- Strong data modelling experience
- Understanding of non-functional design drivers
- Strong background in Java and RESTful services, including solution design and code review
Consultancy & Communication Skills
As a Data Architect, you will also be expected to:
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
