Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Technologist to join a rapidly expanding Data and Decision Support Capability team. This role focuses on cutting-edge research and development across various AI domains, including reinforcement learning, NLP/LLMs, knowledge graphs, computer vision, and advanced sensor processing (radar, sonar, acoustics, and RF).
Typical Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Lead the technical delivery of large-scale AI projects. Oversee and assure the preparation of technical reports, proposals, and supporting materials.
- Research & Innovation: Identify novel research areas with the potential for academic partnerships or cross-organizational collaboration. Direct research activities in key strategic areas.
- Communication: Effectively present research topics to both technical and non-technical internal audiences, as well as external customers.
- Mentoring: Undertake technical mentoring and development of junior engineering and research staff.
- Engineering Assurance: Provide engineering assurance on bids, publications, and project deliverables, leveraging deep expertise to improve overall output quality.
Technical Domain Focus
Candidates should ideally possess expertise or interest in one or more of the following domains:
- AI/ML for imagery and remote sensing applications
- Reinforcement learning
- Natural Language Processing (NLP) & Large Language Models (LLMs)
- Knowledge graphs and graph-based neural networks
- AI/ML applied to RF, Electronic Warfare (EW), radar, sonar, or acoustics
- Autonomous systems
Requirements & Qualifications
Essential
- Education: PhD in a relevant quantitative or technical discipline.
- Experience: Circa 10+ years of demonstrable experience in an AI/ML role within industry or academia (ideally with exposure to the defense or security sectors).
- Leadership: Proven track record of leading R&D teams.
- Assurance & Proposals: Direct experience undertaking Engineering Assurance activities and writing technical proposals.
Desirable
- Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in relevant scientific journals and conferences is highly advantageous.

Due to the nature of the projects, many roles within this sector are subject to security and export control restrictions. Applicants must, at a minimum, achieve standard baseline security clearance. Higher levels of national security vetting may require a continuous residency period (typically 5 to 10 years) in the host country.
