About the Project:
Our client – a leading global consultancy – is delivering a major programme within HMRC’s Risk and Intelligence Service (RIS) to strengthen fraud detection and compliance for Self-Assessment (SA) registrations. The Preventative Risking (PR) team plays a critical role in identifying fraudulent activity — currently detecting over 200,000 fraudulent registrations out of 1 million annually — and saving the UK taxpayer hundreds of millions in lost revenue. To enhance these capabilities, the team is migrating and automating data ingestion and risk analytics processes within the SAS Viya 4 platform, leveraging 20+ data sources from the Minerva Oracle estate. This new test role sits at the heart of that transformation — ensuring that automated testing, data quality, and performance assurance are embedded into every stage of delivery.
The Role:
We’re looking for a Network Test Specialist / Test Automation Engineer with strong experience in data and analytics platforms, ideally including SAS Viya. You’ll join a newly formed agile team within the Minerva platform programme, working closely with developers, DevOps engineers, and analysts to build robust automated test frameworks supporting the ingestion, analytics, and Intelligent Decisioning capabilities of the platform. You’ll own the automation test strategy, build frameworks from the ground up, integrate them into CI/CD pipelines, and ensure that every component — from data pipelines to user interfaces — is validated efficiently and reliably.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and implement test automation strategies for SAS Viya 4 applications (including Visual Analytics and Intelligent Decisioning).
- Build, maintain, and evolve automation frameworks (e.g. Selenium, PyTest, JUnit).
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Jenkins, Git).
- Lead on test data strategy, defect management, and environment configuration.
- Collaborate within an Agile Scrum team — attending ceremonies, demos, and retrospectives.
- Troubleshoot issues across SAS Viya containerized environments (OpenShift, Kubernetes).
- Ensure test coverage meets both business and technical objectives through close stakeholder engagement.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Proven background in test automation for data or analytics platforms, ideally SAS Viya 4.
- Strong experience with Python or Shell scripting and automation frameworks (Selenium, PyTest, JUnit).
- Familiarity with REST APIs and endpoint testing.
- CI/CD tools and version control (Git, Jenkins, GitLab).
- Data management, profiling, and validation experience.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Able to define test direction, strategy, and tooling approach for automation teams.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with SAS Viya architecture and components (VA, ID, CAS).
- Understanding of containerized and orchestration environments (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
Why Join?
This is a chance to contribute to one of the most high-impact government risk intelligence programmes in the UK — directly shaping how HMRC detects and prevents fraud through automation, analytics, and modern cloud-based platforms. You’ll be working with cutting-edge SAS technologies in a collaborative, delivery-focused environment.
