Our client is a leading technology and engineering consultancy supporting mission-critical projects across defence, engineering, and secure infrastructure programmes in the UK. They are looking for a Unix/Linux Engineer to join their on-site operations team in Barrow, maintaining and supporting complex systems that underpin national-level projects.
The role will see you providing day-to-day support and maintenance for Unix and Linux environments (Solaris and Red Hat), ensuring high system availability, rapid issue resolution, and compliance with security standards. You will handle incident management, performance tuning, and patching, as well as contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing across the team.
The role is based on-site in Barrow five days a week due to the secure nature of the work, and you will participate in a rostered on-call schedule to support critical operations.
Key responsibilities:
- Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot Unix/Linux systems in production and development environments
- Apply regular patches and updates to ensure security and performance compliance
- Respond to alerts, incidents, and service requests, resolving technical issues within SLA
- Manage user accounts, permissions, and file systems
- Automate routine administration tasks using Bash or Python scripting
- Maintain documentation of processes, known issues, and resolutions
Required experience:
- Strong background in Unix/Linux system administration (Solaris 10/11, Red Hat Enterprise Linux)
- Experience with Ansible, Docker, Mirantis, or Podman desirable
- Skilled in troubleshooting and root cause analysis
- Scripting experience (Bash, Python)
- Familiar with VMware and system monitoring tools such as vROps
- Strong communication skills and customer-focused approach
