Senior Data Engineer | Defence | Stevenage or Bolton | Circa Β£55,000 + Bonus
A leading UK defence and technology organisation is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join its central information systems function, turning complex information from across the business into a trusted, well-governed asset.
The opportunity
You will work with teams across the whole organisation, including engineering, simulation, testing, production, quality, supply chain, maintenance and corporate functions. Your focus will be bringing together data from a wide range of sources, from business systems to test environments and shop-floor equipment, and shaping it into solutions that people can rely on to make decisions.
What you will be doing
- Working with technical and business stakeholders to understand their needs and delivering data solutions from concept through to production.
- Building scalable batch and streaming pipelines that draw on engineering, manufacturing and enterprise systems.
- Designing and shaping the data platform itself, including lakes, warehouses, lakehouses and time-series storage.
- Creating Power BI reporting that supports self-service analysis, performance tracking and senior-level insight.
- Setting standards for data models, quality, lineage and security in line with the demands of a regulated defence environment.
- Championing DataOps practices, including automated deployment, monitoring and containerised delivery across hybrid and on-premise environments.
About you
- Proven data engineering experience, ideally within defence, aerospace or another industrial setting.
- Strong Python and SQL skills, with exposure to C++, C# or MATLAB seen as a bonus.
- Hands-on experience with orchestration and pipeline tools such as Airflow, Azure services or SSIS, and streaming technologies such as Spark or Kafka.
- Familiarity with relational and analytical databases such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle or Snowflake.
- Experience with Power BI, ideally including DAX, or a similar visualisation tool.
- A working knowledge of Git, Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD.
- Awareness of relevant standards and security frameworks is helpful but not essential.
- A collaborative, self-driven approach, comfortable owning your work and partnering with multidisciplinary teams.
Salary and package
- Annual company bonus of up to Β£2,500.
- Pension contributions of up to 14% combined.
- Free on-site parking and subsidised meals.
Working model
Hybrid, with two days per week on site at either Stevenage or Bolton and the remainder from home.
