The Faculty of Philosophy and History, Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main invites applications for the following position as civil servant or public employee, to commence at the earliest possible date but no later than 30 November 2020. The initial tenure track appointment is for six years according to 64 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Hesse (HHG). The professorship is funded by the "Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses (BLP-TT)". Upon successful evaluation, the incumbent will be promoted to a permanent position at a higher level (W2).
Candidates should not have obtained their PhD at Goethe University Frankfurt or should have worked as a researcher at an external institution for at least two years after their PhD. The doctorate should not be more than four years old. The professorship is within the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (Institut für Ethnologie). The successful candidate should contribute independently to research and teaching within the department. Emphasis is placed on the ability and willingness to expand the department's regional and thematic profile, an excellent doctoral thesis, and empirical ethnographic research. Experience in securing third-party funding is desirable.
Prerequisites include an excellent doctoral thesis in Social and/or Cultural Anthropology, Ethnologie, or a related field. The candidate will be expected to participate in academic self-administration. Goethe University aims to increase the proportion of female faculty and encourages women to apply. Applications from candidates with international experience are explicitly welcomed.
The primary language of instruction is usually German; international applicants will have the opportunity to teach in English initially and to become proficient in German within two years. Severely handicapped applicants with equal qualifications will be given preferential consideration.
