Originating from the Gaelic term ‘machair’, meaning ‘the linking stretch of land that joins the grassy dunes with the shoreline’, The Machrie offers elevated comforts and unforgettable experiences.
Our Kitchen Porter role: At Another Place – The Machrie, the kitchen is not just a place of work, but a vibrant and enjoyable environment where teamwork thrives. As our Kitchen Porter, you'll be an integral part of this dynamic team. With your dedication and attention to detail, you'll help maintain a clean and organised kitchen, transforming it into a hub of efficient creativity. From washing and sanitising dishes to keeping the kitchen tidy, your contributions will ensure a smooth operation that everyone can take pride in.
But it’s not all about cleaning and organisation. As a team player, you'll assist the chefs with ingredient preparation, handle deliveries, and support various kitchen tasks. Your enthusiasm and willingness to go the extra mile will enhance teamwork and aid in creating an enjoyable and hospitable working environment. This is a seasonal position from February to September with the freedom to experience everything life at The Machrie offers.
As our Kitchen Porter you’ll be:
- Ensuring the cleaning of all kitchen equipment, as required by the Executive Chef and Head Chef, such as utensils, and floor and working surfaces in the kitchen and adjacent areas, is carried out satisfactorily.
- Carrying out other duties as required to the Executive Chef, Head Chef and Management.
- Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and personal hygiene to the standard required by the hotel and by law.
- Ensuring full refuse bags are removed and replaced promptly, and that full swing bins are removed and replaced immediately, as well as clearing any spillages.
- Cleaning the floor area daily and at the Chef’s discretion.
- Sweeping and cleaning the corridors and passageways through the kitchen.
- Washing crockery, cutlery and ensuring that work surfaces are clean and tidy.
- Cleaning all pots in the pot wash area and maintaining cleanliness of the area.
- Helping with any preparation needed for daily service.
- Assisting the smooth running of all aspects of the kitchen and back of house areas.
- Maintaining an organised, clean and safe workplace for all.
- Correctly recording all waste in the appropriate method (no member of staff is to remove any item without first checking with a supervisor and completing the kitchen wastage book).

Additional experience you’ll need:
- Previous experience of island living, or equivalent (desirable).
- A valid driving licence, and relevant driving experience.
- Hobbies or interests in the following areas: the outdoors, outdoor instructing, writing, natural history, geology, marine science, animal science, photography, and documentary filmmaking, or equivalent (desirable).
