Overview

Deputy Head Greenkeeper role at Another Place, The Machrie on Islay. Join a contemporary hotel with a world-class golf links, restaurant, and leisure facilities. The Deputy Head Greenkeeper plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality and playability of the golf course, and may act as Head Greenkeeper in their absence.

Responsibilities

  • Implement turf grass/plant material maintenance programs.
  • Supervise and manage personnel for all golf maintenance activities.
  • Support budgeting/forecasting and communicate with members, guests, and management.
  • Schedule and maintain irrigation systems, apply fertilizers and pesticides, and record related data.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and assist with adherence to COSHH, LOLER, HR policies, SOPs, and audits.
  • Direct construction and maintenance of golf grounds; work with Course Manager/Head Greenkeeper on issues related to maintenance.
  • Train and develop staff; provide technical, operational, and safety instruction.
  • Coordinate maintenance around visitor, member play and events to minimize disruption.
  • Lead in the Head Greenkeeper’s absence and contribute to cost control and reporting.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 3-5 years’ experience as a Senior Greenkeeper or deputy head greenkeeper; links experience at a premium venue advantageous.
  • 2-year degree or certificate in Turf Management (or related field); SVQ Level 3 Golf Course Management as a minimum.
  • Certification by GCSA, BIGGA or equivalent preferred.
  • Advanced computer skills for financial reporting and operations control; proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of agronomic maintenance of greens, fairways, roughs, dunes, and water features; irrigation and drainage planning.
  • Strong leadership, recruitment, training, and people-management abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure, be self-motivated, proactive, and adaptable.
  • Fluency in English; valid driver’s license; own transport essential.
  • Willingness to attend regional/international golf events and trade shows as needed.
