Responsibilities of the role

  • Responsible for consistently monitoring and leading the standard of care being delivered by care home staff to all service users to ensure it is at the optimum levels at all times.
  • Ensuring that all residents receive quality medical and personal care and that care plans are fully maintained.
  • Responsible for monitoring the state of wellbeing of each resident, being aware of any change impacting on care and care plans, ensuring that new needs are met and written records are amended to reflect any variation.
  • Act as a focal point for contact with residents, their relatives and visitors, as well as health and social care professionals involved in their wellbeing, ensuring that any reasonable requests are acted upon and concerns or complaints are promptly investigated and dealt with appropriately.
  • Support the Home Manager in the implementation of all policies, procedures and business objectives in order to excel the business forward.
  • To manage the Home in the absence of the Home Manager/Deputy Home Manager in line with the company guidelines.
  • Conduct staff supervisions and appraisals in line with the company policy and to meet with external regulator guidelines.
  • Attend and encourage staff to attend all relevant staff meetings.
  • Take responsibility for marketing the Home in conjunction with the Home Manager to existing and potential residents and relatives, health and social care professionals, developing links with other care providers.
  • Responsible for ensuring all staff are trained and updated on safe systems of work including Manual Handling and fire safety evacuation procedures through the induction process.
  • Understand your personal responsibilities in relation to the Health and Safety at Work Act including a working knowledge of COSHH assessments.
  • To assist in the completion of all resident’s documentation in line with the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority.
  • To be responsible for and to carry out general nursing duties including but not limited to maintaining peg tubes, catheter care, the changing of dressings and administering of medication.
  • To be responsible for the ordering of repeat prescriptions, administration and handling of resident’s medication in line with the Companies policy and procedures, ensuring adherence at all times to be in line with the Associated Minimum Standards and pharmaceutical guidelines.
  • To ensure that all care practices within the home are maintained to the highest level at all times.
  • To report to the Home Manager any incident or activity which may affect the wellbeing, safety or welfare of any resident.
  • To support and assist the residents to live as normal a life as possible, recognising that assistance should only be given when necessary.
  • To assist in all aspects of personal care including but not limited to toileting, dressing, eating, personal hygiene and intimate personal care.
  • To ensure that any relevant documentation and/or reports relating to care plans, diaries, health and safety practices, and maintenance practices are completed fully during a working shift.
  • To ensure that the highest quality of care is maintained at all times and to consistently display a courteous and helpful manner towards the residents, staff and all visitors to the home.
  • To assist with maintaining a safe and healthy environment, consistently demonstrating safe practice, both within the home and on occasions when escorting patients off site.
  • To ensure that attendance to both mandatory and required training courses are met in order that skills, knowledge and competency levels are maintained to carry out the role efficiently and effectively.

  • It is the responsibility of every member of staff to ensure compliance with health and safety at work legislation.
  • It is the personal responsibility of all staff to act and abide by ‘The Nursing Homes Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005 and The Residential Care Homes Regulations (Northern Ireland) and Associated Minimum Standards’.
  • To perform any other related duties that may arise from time to time to meet the ongoing needs of the company.

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Nurse Qualification
  • 5 years post registration experience with at least 2 in the last 3 years working in a similar care setting

Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant experience managing a team within care home setting
  • Understanding of the pillars of clinical governance
  • Experience of coordinating and managing residents care plans, detailed risk assessments with an understanding of regulatory frameworks
  • Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints
  • Supervision and managerial experience
  • Effective leadership and organisational skills or level 5 Management qualification
  • IT skills
