Position Summary
In collaboration with the DHY Program Director, the Academic Coordinator oversees didactic instruction in the Dental Hygiene (DHY) program at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC), including quality assurance of instruction, oversight of part-time faculty, reviewing and updating program manuals, ensuring course content is current, assisting the DHY Clinical Coordinator in supervising students in the dental clinic, and monitoring student retention and completion. The Academic Coordinator participates in student recruitment, orientations, assessment activities, program analysis, student support, workforce development, and technology integration. Additional duties include instruction in classroom, laboratory, clinical, hybrid, and online formats, tutoring support, and ensuring compliance with college policies, CODA standards, CDC guidelines, OSHA standards, and ADA recommendations. This is a staff position requiring an in-person presence. The Academic Coordinator teaches 30–36 full-time load hours (FLH) annually, including summer instruction, and is identified as faculty for CODA reporting purposes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- In consultation with the DHY Director, oversee didactic, laboratory, simulation, and clinical instruction including teaching and supervision of students in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings; review and revise course content; assist with curriculum development and course sequencing; develop course and laboratory schedules; assist with curriculum quality assurance; and assist the Clinical Coordinator with clinic operations, patient care supervision, quality assurance activities, student clinical evaluation, and communication with supervising dentists, patients, and community partners.
- In consultation with the DHY Director, coordinate assessment of curriculum effectiveness, maintain academic records, monitor student progression, retention, and completion, manage surveys for students/graduates/employers, and conduct program and course assessment activities in compliance with Learning Outcomes Assessment (LOA) and CODA standards. Assist with CODA accreditation compliance activities, annual reporting, accreditation documentation, required faculty-to-student ratio compliance, and site visit preparation activities.
- Conduct information sessions; participate in recruitment, outreach, and marketing events; advise and mentor students throughout the program; support remediation and tutoring activities; assist with SGA and SADHA activities; participate on advisory boards and committees; support employment and career preparation activities; assist with workforce development initiatives and collaboration with the Career Center and community employers; assist with student retention, progression, engagement, and completion initiatives. Participate in community outreach activities and partnerships that support oral health access and workforce development initiatives.
- Assist the DHY Director with maintenance and monitoring of laboratory, simulation, radiology, and clinical equipment; maintain repair logs and records; coordinate repairs with vendors; assist with inventory and supply ordering; support hazardous waste management and infection control compliance; and assist with management and implementation of dental software systems, educational technologies, simulation equipment, digital radiography, Dentrix Enterprise, and digital clinical systems.
Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Dental Education. Maintain Maryland Registered Dental Hygienist licensure, CPR certification, continuing education, and immunization compliance.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Active Maryland Dental Hygienist License, CPR Certification, Local Anesthesia Certification, and Nitrous Oxide Certification
- Minimum of two (2) years of Dental Hygiene teaching experience (or equivalent)
- Familiarity with CODA accreditation standards and guidelines
- Experience with Learning Outcomes Assessment (LOA) and accreditation reporting
- Experience implementing standard operating procedures and health/safety regulations
- Experience supervising students in laboratory and clinical settings
- Experience with dental clinic operations and patient care workflows
- Experience with Dentrix Enterprise or equivalent dental software systems
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse faculty, staff, students, patients, and community members
- Ability to work flexible schedules including evenings/weekends
- Ability to travel for conferences and workshops
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, dental technology systems, and educational technologies
