Overview

We are partnering with a growing, technology-led organisation of approximately 115 employees to hire a Lead IT Engineer to own and run their internal IT function end-to-end. This is a hands-on leadership role combining strategic direction with day-to-day support.

The successful candidate will define and manage the IT environment across devices, Microsoft services, business systems and security, ensuring a simple, secure and cost-effective experience for employees. Within 3–6 months, they will hire a junior IT engineer, while remaining accountable for delivery and escalation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the IT roadmap, standards and tooling across the organisation
  • Provide commercially sound recommendations on devices, licensing and cost optimisation
  • Balance strategic planning with operational delivery and user support

End User Computing & Infrastructure

  • Manage Windows endpoint environment (Intune, Autopilot, device lifecycle, security baselines)
  • Administer Microsoft 365 and Azure (identity, access, compliance, integrations)

Business Systems & Data

  • Support and optimise core platforms including Dynamics 365 F&O, Monday.com, Zoho and HubSpot
  • Lead initiatives to align and integrate data across systems
  • Manage third-party vendors and application support

User Support & Operations

  • Act as primary IT contact and escalation point
  • Resolve first-line issues across devices, connectivity and applications
  • Deliver effective onboarding/offboarding and maintain user documentation

Cyber Security & Compliance

  • Maintain endpoint security, patching, access control and monitoring
  • Support ISO 2701, Cyber Essentials Plus and audit requirements

IT Service Management & Process

  • Own ITSM processes and tooling (e.g. BMC Helix or equivalent)
  • Drive automation, documentation and scalable processes
  • Maintain accurate asset, licence and configuration records

Team Development

  • Recruit and manage a junior IT engineer within 3–6 months

Requirements

  • Proven experience as the lead or sole IT professional in an SME (approx. 50–300 users)
  • Experience working standalone or as the most senior IT resource within a small team
  • Strong capability to balance strategic IT leadership with hands-on support
  • Expertise in Microsoft 365, Azure, Intune and modern endpoint management
  • Experience supporting SaaS business systems and managing vendors
  • Exposure to cyber security frameworks (e.g. ISO 2701, Cyber Essentials Plus)
  • Familiarity with IT service management systems (e.g. BMC Helix or similar)
  • Experience delivering system/data integration or improvement initiatives
  • Strong communication skills with a pragmatic, commercially aware approach
