AnimalKind is a veterinary group built to do things differently: three practices across two jurisdictions (England and Guernsey), brought together under one holding company with the ambition to become a genuinely better model for pet healthcare. We're small enough that every hire changes the shape of the business, and early enough that the person in this role will help build the financial backbone the rest of the group runs on.
The Opportunity
We're bringing bookkeeping in-house to build stronger financial controls and run the group more effectively, and this is the first dedicated hire into that function. You won't be joining a large, established team where processes already exist and your job is to follow them. You'll be building alongside our leadership team, taking full ownership of the group's books, and becoming the person everyone, from our leadership to our external accountants, trusts to know exactly where the money and the numbers stand.
This is not an assistant role. You'll own the ledger daily across all three entities, not support someone else in owning it.
What You'll Own
- Daily bank reconciliation across all three entities, catching what's wrong before it becomes a problem
- Accounts payable and receivable, and being the person who actually knows the state of cash at any given moment
- Working alongside our external accountants on quarterly and annual consolidation, without needing your hand held
- Keeping a close eye on cash position and flagging concerns
- Keeping our books clean against a documented accounting policy, applied consistently rather than "how it's always been done"
What We're Looking For
- Deep, hands-on Xero proficiency, non-negotiable: daily bank reconciliation, coding, bank rules and multi-org navigation, comfortable maintaining it unsupervised (You will be the Xero Hero for the company)
- You've run a full ledger sole-charge, ideally across more than one entity at once
- AAT qualified (MAAT) or clearly qualified by experience: we want someone who is genuinely good at this, not someone treating it as a stepping stone toward ACCA or CIMA
- Comfortable working independently and confident enough to challenge a number that looks wrong, wherever it came from
- Based in or able to work on-site in Wigan, with some part-time remote flexibility
