The Company

A leading global specialist insurance brokerage and risk advisory business is building out their team focused on tax risk and transactional insurance.

Working at the intersection of law, finance and insurance, the team partners with leading corporates, investors, law firms and advisers to find innovative solutions to complex risks arising from transactions.

This is an exciting opportunity for a tax lawyer looking to move beyond private practice into a commercial, client-facing role where your technical expertise will directly inform transactions and insurance solutions.

You will work closely with clients, brokers, lawyers and other advisers, developing a deep understanding of the commercial drivers behind each transaction and helping to structure solutions that enable deals to proceed with greater certainty.

The Role

As a Tax Underwriter, you will assess and underwrite tax risks arising from M&A transactions, restructurings, investments and other complex corporate arrangements.

You will use your legal and tax expertise to analyse risk, engage directly with clients and their advisers, and help develop tailored insurance solutions.

The role offers a genuine opportunity to make the move from advising on transactions to being part of the commercial decision-making process — combining technical analysis with negotiation, relationship management and an understanding of how insurance can solve real-world transactional challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess tax risks arising from M&A transactions, corporate restructurings, investments and other complex financial arrangements.
  • Review and analyse tax opinions, legal documentation, transaction structures and financial information to evaluate potential exposures.
  • Work directly with brokers, clients, law firms, tax advisers and other stakeholders to understand risks and develop appropriate insurance solutions.
  • Apply your tax and legal expertise to make commercial underwriting decisions and determine appropriate policy terms.
  • Assist in structuring, negotiating and placing tax liability insurance policies.
  • Build trusted relationships with clients, brokers, law firms and tax advisers, becoming a knowledgeable and valued adviser on tax risk.
  • Keep abreast of changes in tax legislation, HMRC practice, case law and market developments and assess their implications for underwriting.
  • Work closely with senior members of the team to develop the portfolio and identify new business opportunities.
  • Contribute to the continued development of the team’s approach to assessing and transferring tax risk.

Why Make the Move?

For a lawyer considering a move out of private practice, this role offers the opportunity to use your legal expertise in a fundamentally different way.

Rather than advising clients from the sidelines, you will be directly involved in understanding their objectives, assessing risk and helping them find a practical solution.

You will retain the intellectual challenge of complex tax work while gaining exposure to clients, negotiations, deal-making and commercial decision-making.

It is an opportunity to develop a career in a fast-growing specialist area while working alongside experienced professionals from the legal, insurance and financial markets.

If you are a strong tax lawyer who enjoys the technical detail but is increasingly motivated by commercial exposure, client interaction and having a direct impact on transactions, this could be an excellent next step.
