The Vessel Manager/Technical Superintendent is responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost-efficient technical management of 3-5 vessels. Acting as the focal point for all matters concerning assigned ships, the role ensures full compliance with regulatory and company standards while maintaining each vessel\’s technical condition, machinery reliability, and energy efficiency within approved budgets. Working closely with the Operations and QHSE teams and supported by a Technical Officer or Purchaser, the Vessel Manager oversees maintenance planning, repairs, procurement, and reporting, providing leadership and technical guidance to onboard teams and representing the company in dealings with owners, auditors, and third parties.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Manage the technical operation of 3-5 vessels, ensuring they are operated safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with international conventions, flag-state, class, and company requirements.
  • Plan and oversee maintenance and repair activities, including dry-dockings, intermediate surveys, and major overhauls, ensuring work scopes, budgets, and timelines are properly defined and executed.
  • Monitor vessel condition and performance, including machinery reliability, fuel efficiency, and planned maintenance (PMS) compliance, initiating corrective actions where required.
  • Conduct regular vessel inspections (typically quarterly) to assess technical condition, verify safety and environmental standards, and follow up on corrective actions from audits or inspections.
  • Prepare, justify, and manage vessel budgets, tracking actual expenditures and ensuring cost control within owner-approved limits; elevate significant variances to the Fleet Manager.
  • Coordinate procurement and logistics of spares, stores, and services through the assigned Technical Officer/Purchaser, ensuring timely and cost-effective supply chain support to vessels.
  • Ensure statutory and class survey compliance, maintaining awareness of due dates for certificates, surveys, and dry-dockings, and ensuring required work is planned and completed.
  • Close coordination with terminals and commercial operators to maintain schedule integrity and minimize service disruption.
  • Support incident response and investigations, performing root-cause analysis and implementing preventive measures to improve fleet safety and reliability.
  • Represent the company and owners\’ interests in vetting inspections, third-party audits, and pre-purchase or pre-takeover inspections as required.
  • Provide clear and regular reporting to owners and the Fleet Manager on vessel condition, performance, incidents, and ongoing projects.
  • Work closely with the Operations and QHSE Managers, aligning technical, operational, and safety priorities for the assigned ships.
  • Maintain strong relationships with masters and chief engineers, providing guidance, technical advice, and leadership to ensure onboard teams meet company expectations.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven experience as a Vessel Manager or Technical Superintendent, with a solid background in the technical and operational management of vessels.
  • Deep technical understanding of shipboard systems is essential. A Second Engineer (Class 2) Certificate of Competency or higher is preferred.
  • Practical experience in RoRo or short-sea shipping operations, with knowledge of their specific maintenance, port turnaround, and regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, and other international conventions governing vessel safety, environmental protection, and operational compliance.
  • Proficient in English, with strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with ship and shore-based teams.

Core Competencies and Attributes

  • Hands-on and agile, able to provide technical and operational support during port calls, dry-dockings, and inspections as needed.
  • Willing and able to travel regularly-both domestically and internationally-to attend vessels, dry-dockings, and client meetings as part of routine management responsibilities.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a proactive and structured approach to vessel management.
  • Effective collaborator who works cross-functionally with Operations, QHSE, and Crewing departments to achieve common goals.
  • Composed and analytical under pressure, maintaining a solutions-oriented mindset in dynamic environments.

  • Valid EU or UK driving license.
