We are looking for a Payroll Officer for a temporary assignment with a duration of six months to one year. The Payroll Officer is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll, ensuring compliance with UK HMRC regulations and internal policies. The role also supports international payroll-related tax calculations, particularly for the US and Norway. While prior experience in international taxation is advantageous, training will be provided where necessary.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Payroll processing: Process end-to-end payroll using Sage Payroll software on a monthly basis ensuring payroll is accurate, compliant, and delivered within required timelines while maintaining employee payroll records, including starters, leavers, and changes to pay or benefits.
- HMRC reporting and compliance: Submit Real Time Information (RTI) filings to HMRC and ensure full compliance with UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements including managing PAYE, National Insurance contributions, and pension deductions. Support audits and respond to HMRC queries where required.
- International Tax Support: Assist with payroll-related tax calculations for employees while working in international waters, in particular while in the US and Norway and support year-end tax reporting and compliance obligations for international jurisdictions.
- Reconciliations & Reporting: Reconcile payroll data to general ledger account and prepare payroll reports for management and finance teams.
- Employee Support: Respond to payroll-related employee queries in a timely and professional manner and provide guidance on payslips, tax codes, and payroll deductions. Plus any other duties as may be reasonably required of you by the management or senior management of the company. Promote and comply with the company’s “Safety Environmental Policy”.

- Technical skills: Experience working in a payroll environment, knowledge of UK payroll legislation and HMRC reporting requirements, experience using Sage Payroll, strong Excel and data handling skills.
- Professional skills: Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy, good organisational and time management skills, quick to pick up new tasks/systems, able to produce work to a high standard and meet deadlines with attention to detail, self-motivated, enjoy helping others and have strong interpersonal skills, flexible in outlook and willing to learn tax of other territories.
Professional Experience and Education
- Experience of Sage payroll system.
- Handle payroll process from a person joining the company to leaving.
- Working knowledge of HMRC statutory and legislative payments/deductions when working in the UK for tax and national insurance requirements.
- Preference but not essential of working with international tax.
