The Shipping Team is a stand-alone profit centre and service provider for ocean freight services within Anglo American Marketing. As part of its role, Shipping is the in-house ocean freight service provider for the Marketing Business, services which include commercial freight provision, technical operations, safety and regulatory support and market information. Shipping leverages off the Anglo American cargo base to generate additional earnings from ocean freight activity by engaging in third party freight activity. Using global scale and strength, the team aims to optimise the marine activities and provide safe, reliable, sustainable and competitive freight to the commodity businesses, their customers and further into Shipping’s own customer base.

Using global scale and strength, we aim to optimise our marine activities and provide safe, reliable, compliant and competitive freight to our commodity businesses and their customers in today’s dynamic marketplace.

Purpose

The purpose of Financial Trading is to optimise and execute the price risk mitigation strategy for Shipping, and to develop & execute trading strategies. The foundation of Financial Trading is to add value to established businesses, facilitating more integrated relationships within and across the value chain.

Key Responsibilities

  • Effective & efficient management of market risk through derivatives
  • Execute buying/selling of derivatives via exchanges or OTC, in accordance with company policy and agreed approvals
  • Develop hedge strategies to manage exposures generated across the Physical Shipping portfolio
  • Advise physical chartering desk on designing innovative, value maximizing offers to customers
  • Analyzing, interpreting and communicating market price activity and signals internally
  • Stay abreast of freight market developments and competitors to develop and propose value maximizing trading strategies
  • Work with Financial Trading Team to look at opportunities to extend trading capability to include other financial products, and to work with external parties to develop other financial product derivatives routes to market as appropriate
  • Work with banks and brokers to execute the agreed Price Risk Management strategy

Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Shipping team in particular with the Scheduling, Chartering and Operations.
  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with ship owners/operators, brokers, traders, and exchanges
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholders, in particular Treasury, Risk and Finance back office

Qualifications

  • A degree or qualification in commerce/business or finance related field
  • Proven track record of financial trading in related freight/bulk commodities
  • Strong relationship with trading counterparties and brokers
  • General expertise in other global commodities and their drivers
  • Proven ability to work with all stakeholders within an organisation (Risk, Legal, Accounting, Tax, Compliance, Operations and Shipping)

Specific Knowledge requirements:

This role requires a high level of experience and knowledge in financial trading. A strong understanding of how financial derivative markets work and the ability to develop and execute financial trading strategies which will add value to the organisation.

Operations:

  • Understanding of the Groups key commodities
  • A sound knowledge of standard charter party terms – and how these are interpreted and relate to our business

Commercial:

  • Expertise in financial derivatives – specifically in commodity markets (highly desirable to have bulk freight/FFA experience)
  • A sound knowledge of financial modelling

Management:

  • Informal mentoring opportunities of the Shipping Financial Trader(s) in the Singapore office

Compliance:

  • A strong understanding of basic governance and control principles when it comes to financial trade
  • A strong understanding of the concept of value at risk (VAR) and how various transactions will impact such calculations
