We have an exciting opportunity for a positive, bright, curious and solutions-oriented solicitor to join our in-house Legal Team as our Regulatory Solicitor. Anglian Water is a heavily regulated business providing critical public services to its 6-7m customers in the East of England. Following the announcement of our current regulatory solicitor’s retirement, we are looking for a well-rounded UK qualified lawyer with a background in regulation and/or competition law who is willing to immerse themselves within water regulation and become a well-respected and highly valued adviser to the business.

You will be required to provide sound, well considered and practical advice on issues arising from the powers, duties and functions specific to a water company (such as statutory / special powers and its Instrument of Appointment), for which an innate and indeed developed understanding of competition law is paramount. It is a truly fascinating role at a time when the water sector is undergoing widespread reform following the Cunliffe review, with further details of the Government’s proposed Clean Water Bill expected in the coming months. This is an opportunity to be involved in a once-in-a-generation programme of regulatory reform for a key public service.

What does it take to be successful?

  • We are looking for a qualified solicitor with experience of advising in relation to a range of regulatory matters and/or competition law.
  • You may not have specific experience in water regulation, but we are looking for curiosity and a willingness to learn about the fascinating and evolving world of water regulation.
  • Ideally, you will have 5+ years relevant experience but if you have less PQE, we would still welcome your application if you can demonstrate strong experience and the required skills, behaviours and potential.
  • You will have excellent research skills, a keen eye for detail and excellent organisation and prioritisation skills.
  • You will be confident in your communication skills and have the ability to advise on complex issues, being solution-driven and with the ability to constructively challenge.
  • You should have strong analytical acumen with the aptitude to relay complex legal reasoning into layman’s language, and a track record of providing excellent customer service.

As a valued employee you'll be entitled to:

  • Competitive pension scheme – Anglian Water double-matches your contributions up to 7%
  • Personal private health care
  • Annual bonus scheme
  • 26 days leave, rising with service + Bank Holidays, with the option to swap Christmas and Easter holidays for those celebrated by your religion (if applicable)
  • Life Cover at 8x your salary
  • Personal Accident cover – up to 5x your salary
  • Flexible benefits to support your wellbeing and lifestyle
  • Free parking at all offices, site and leisure parks
  • Excellent family friendly policies, such as 26 weeks full pay for maternity / adoption leave, as well as 4 weeks paternity / partner pay. Opportunity for shared parental pay.
