Anglian Demolition & Asbestos Limited is looking for a General Manager – Recycling & Waste to join our Company based in Attleborough, Norfolk, NR17 1AN. The General Manager is responsible for the operational management of the Company’s waste management and metal recycling activities. The role will lead and manage all operational, commercial, and compliance aspects of the metal recycling, skip hire, and C&D waste for the transfer station facility. The role ensures efficient running of the transfer station and yard, maximises profitability, maintains full regulatory compliance with environmental safety and recycling legislation, and embeds this into the culture of the wider teams and overall business structure.

Reporting to the Managing Director, the role leads a multidiscipline team including yard supervision, operatives and plant operators to deliver a high standard of service, efficiency and performance across the transfer station and recycling operations.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Operational Management
    • Oversee day-to-day operations in conjunction with the MD of: Metal recycling facility, Skip hire services (delivery, collection, logistics) in conjunction with the Head of Transport and transport administration, Construction & demolition waste processing, Transfer station activities.
    • Manage yard layout, traffic flow, and material handling processes.
    • Implement new procedures to ensure best practice and keep up to date with industry requirements.
    • Ensure optimal use of plant, machinery, and labour resources within the transfer station.
    • Monitor throughput, recovery rates, processing efficiencies and contamination levels.
    • Have a daily presence in the transfer station, supporting supervisors and wider teams with daily briefings, work requirements and safety checks.
  • Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
    • Ensure full compliance with Duty of Care regulations and Health & Safety legislation (e.g., risk assessments, COSHH, PUWER).
    • Lead a strong safety culture across the transfer station, yard and recycling operations.
    • Conduct audits, TCM inspections, and incident investigations.
    • Liaise with local authorities and regulators (e.g., Environment Agency).
    • Manage set budgets for the waste and recycling department, including performance, spending (purchasing and disposal) and cost control.
    • Identify opportunities to increase revenue (e.g., material recovery, pricing strategies, new clients).
    • Monitor scrap metal market trends and adjust buying/selling strategies in conjunction with the Metals Manager.
    • Oversee supplier and contractor relationships for the recycling operations.
    • Drive efficiency to improve margins.
  • People Management & Development
    • Lead and develop Recycling/Picking Line Operatives and Machine Operators.
    • Manage recruitment, training, performance, and disciplinary processes in conjunction with the HR Department.
    • Support the upskilling and training of waste and recycling teams.
    • Ensure adequate staffing levels and shift planning for recycling and waste management operations.
    • Promote a positive, accountable team culture.
  • Skip Hire
    • Support skip hire operations in conjunction with the Head of Transport and wider transport administration teams.
    • Support with the commercial opportunities for the waste and recycling operations, upselling skip hire activities and onboarding new clients and customers to increase waste streams.
    • Monitor and review available skips and equipment offerings for the waste and recycling operations.
  • Maintain strong relationships with:
    • Construction contractors.
    • Local authorities.
    • Scrap buyers and processors.
  • Resolve escalated customer issues.
  • Support business development and key account growth.
  • Work with internal departments of Anglian to enhance offerings and drive synergies and efficiencies for the waste and recycling operations.
  • Attend and represent the waste and recycling functions at management meetings, contributing to planning and operational requirements.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure accurate record-keeping for Hazardous waste consignment notes (if applicable) and Duty of Care documentation.
  • Maintain site permits and reporting requirements.
  • Implement and monitor operational procedures.
  • Carry out audits using safety culture documentation procedures.

Continuous Improvement & Client Relations

  • Identify and implement process improvements.
  • Introduce best practices in recycling efficiency and waste segregation.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives and landfill diversion targets.
  • Evaluate new equipment or technologies.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Site profitability and cost control.
  • Recycling/recovery rates.
  • Health & Safety metrics (incident frequency rate).
  • Fleet utilisation and turnaround times.
  • Customer satisfaction and retention.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Waste management, recycling operations, or metal processing.
  • Strong knowledge of UK environmental and waste regulations.
  • Experience managing large operational teams.
  • Health & Safety experience.
  • IOSH / NEBOSH certification.
  • Experience with scrap metal, recycling or skip hire trading.
  • Leadership and team management.
  • Operational efficiency and problem-solving.
  • Commercial acumen.
  • Regulatory awareness.
  • Communication and stakeholder management.
  • Decision-making under pressure.

Working Conditions

  • Predominantly site-based (office/yard/transfer station environment).
  • Exposure to heavy machinery, noise, and outdoor conditions.
  • May require early starts, occasional weekends, and on-call availability.

Reporting & Structure

  • Direct Reports: Supervisor, Metals Manager, Machine Operators, Picking Line Operatives, Recycling Operatives.
  • Indirect Reports: Yard operatives, drivers, admin staff.

Schedule: Monday to Friday 08:00am-5:00pm

Salary: £40,000.00-£50,000.00 per year
